The American Future: A History, by Simon Schama:

 What is an American?

While the 2008 presidential campaign is in full swing, Simon Schama travels through America to dig deep into the conflicts of its history to understand what is at stake right now.Simon looks at the bitter conflict over immigration in American history. Who should be allowed to enter America and call themselves an American has always been one of the nation's most divisive issues, and it continues to be so at this election. He traces the roots of this conflict to the founding of America.
The early settlers were themselves immigrants, but they saw America as fundamentally a white and Protestant nation. Simon looks at the key events that challenged this view: the annexation of parts of Mexico in 1848 that made 100,000 non-whites American citizens, the immigration and subsequent expulsion of the Chinese in the late 19th century, and the massive immigration from Eastern Europe during the industrialisation of the 1920s. Each time there have been those who have insisted America must stay white if it's to stay true to itself, and each time they have been defeated by the sheer force of history.
John F Kennedy defined America as a Nation of Immigrants in 1964 and Simon argues that the candidacy of Barack Obama represents the final triumph of the vision of America as a multi-ethnic nation

Phil Spector Easy Rider

Phil Spector in "Easy Rider" (1969)

There are several other writeups about Phil's life work available through Rolling Stone and SpectroPop.

"The world could use a new Phil Spector record, that's for sure." - Bob Dylan: Rolling Stone Nov/Dec 1987

Phillip Spector (born December 25, 1940) is an American musician, songwriter and record producer.

Phil Spector (photographed in 1993)
Spector brought a new sound to pop music

Coming to prominence in the early 1960s, Spector became one of the most distinctive producers in the history of popular music. He was hailed in his heyday by Tom Wolfe as the "First Tycoon of Teen." The originator of the famous "Wall of Sound" production technique, Spector was a pioneer of the 1960s' girl group sound and clocked in over twenty-five Top 40 hits between 1960 and 1965. In later years he worked with various artists, including Ike and Tina Turner, The Beatles, and Ramones with similar success. In 1989, Spector was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer.

The 1965 song "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", co-written by Phil Spector, is listed by BMI as the song with the most U.S. air play in the 20th century. The original version was performed by The Righteous Brothers and produced by Spector.

Phil Spector: Pop innovator
Legendary pop producer Phil Spector has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a woman at his California home. BBC News Online looks at how he became a household name.

Spector has worked with some of the biggest names in the pop and rock business, such as the Beatles and Ike and Tina Turner.

He has produced such hits as You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' by the Righteous Brothers and the Ronettes' Be My Baby.

The 62-year-old is a pioneer in pop record production, winning fame for his Wall of Sound technique featuring lush orchestration mixed into rock and roll.

But friends and colleagues have talked of a troubled side to Spector in the past.

"He was extremely eccentric, he liked to keep his house dark, and there was the famous phase where he did not come out of the house for a very long time," music commentator Paul Gambaccini told BBC Radio Five Live.

"And he did alienate people," he added.

Born Harvey Phillip Spector, the New Yorker started out as a musician in his own right in 1958 as a member of the Los Angeles band the Teddy Bears.

Inspiration

As songwriter, guitarist and backup singer for the band, which hit the big time with To Know Him is to Love Him, he became a millionaire by the age of 21.

The song was inspired by the inscription on the gravestone of his father Benjamin, who committed suicide in 1949.

When the Teddy Bears split up he moved back to New York where he continued to write songs and produce records, notably for the Crystals and the Ronettes, effectively creating the concept of the girl group.

He created the Wall of Sound effect, which involved overdubbing scores of musicians to create a massive roar. It changed the way pop records were produced.

His session players included guitarist Glen Campbell, pianist Leon Russell, drummer Hal Blaine and the late Sonny Bono. They were affectionately called The Wrecking Crew.

'Gun incident'

Spector ran his own record label with Lester Sill under the name Philles, eventually buying out his partner.

Some say his career had reached its zenith by 1966, when a Spector-produced record, Ike and Tina Turner's River Deep, Mountain High, failed commercially and he stepped back from the public eye and closed down Philles Records.

But he went on to produce the Beatles' album Let it Be which was released in 1970.

He continued his association with the Beatles following their break-up, working with John Lennon on Imagine and helping Yoko Ono produce Lennon's work after his death.

He also produced George Harrison's All Things Must Pass in 1970.

He became legendary - even notorious - for his eccentric habits while recording with artists.

'Optimistic'

In 1980, Spector was working with rock band the Ramones on the album End of the Century. While recording, he allegedly pulled a gun on the band in a dispute over master tapes.

After that, he spent almost two decades out of the spotlight, although the US music industry honoured him in 1989, inducting him into its Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He was recently lured out of retirement to work with UK band Starsailor to record two songs, his first project for 23 years.

Mick Brown of The Telegraph recently conducted the first interview with Spector in 25 years.

He said Spector was "optimistic" about the future and was keen to re-establish himself as a music producer.

Spector married Ronnie Bennett, a member of the Ronettes, but they divorced in 1974. He has five children.

Legendary record producer Phil Spector has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman was found shot dead inside his mansion in Los Angeles.
He was arrested at the property in the suburb of Alhambra around 0500 (1300 GMT) on Monday after someone inside alerted police.

He was freed a few hours later on bail of $1m.

The 62-year-old producer is expected to appear in court later this week to be formally charged with murder and will be defended by Robert Shapiro, the lawyer made famous by the OJ Simpson trial.

The dead woman has been named as 40-year-old Lana Clarkson of Los Angeles but investigators would not comment on her possible relationship with Mr Spector.

Mr Shapiro said he did not know "answers to any of this" when contacted at the Alhambra Police Department before his client's release on bail.

House sealed off

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said that a firearm had been recovered in the mansion and no-one else was being sought in connection with the killing.

Police sealed off the front of the house, a 10-bedroom mansion called Pyrenees Castle, and examined a black Mercedes car parked in the driveway. Forensic teams are continuing to search the house.

Neighbours said the reclusive multi-millionaire, who reportedly lived alone, had not been seen at the house recently.

The Associated Press news agency quoted attorney Marvin Mitchelson, a friend of the producer, as saying Mr Spector had been working on a film about his life.

"His mental state has been great - very rational, very together," Mr Mitchelson said.

Trademark sound

Mr Spector is famous for producing acts like the Beatles, the Ronettes, Tina Turner, and the Ramones.

He is considered a pioneer in rock music production and is famed for his influential technique, known as the Wall of Sound, which featured soaring orchestration and multi-layered vocals.

It became a trademark of some of the most acclaimed pop hits of the 1960s, such as The Crystals' Da Doo Ron Ron and the Ronettes' Be My Baby.

Mr Spector won two Grammy awards for his work and is featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum in Ohio.

Spector in £2m payout to The Ronettes

Thursday, 15 November, 2001, 18:55 GMT Spector in £2m payout to The Ronettes
New York was their home in the 1940s
The Ronettes were all born in New York

An American appeals court has ordered record producer Phil Spector to pay about $3m (£2.09m) to The Ronettes, the 1960s band he discovered and managed.

The female trio, which included his wife, was paid little from royalties, while Spector earned millions at their expense, the State Supreme Court's Appellate Division ruled on Tuesday.

The decision upheld a lower court ruling that Spector had violated his 1963 contract with the band.

A judge in the 1998 trial ruled that Spector, who kept the rights to recordings, should have shared with the band any royalties made beyond record sales.

Yet Spector sold the recordings for use as background music in movies, videocassette recordings and advertising.

For example, the Ronettes' biggest hit, Be My Baby, was played with the opening credits of the movie Dirty Dancing.

'Paid them nothing'

For such sales, industry custom required Spector, who kept the rights to all Ronettes recordings, to pay a 50% royalty to the recording artists.

The judge said he paid the women nothing.

The appeals court ordered Spector, 57, to pay Veronica "Ronnie" Bennett Spector Greenfield, 57, her sister Estelle Bennett, 55, and their cousin Nedra Talley Ross, 55, $2.97m (£2.07m) plus interest.

Spector's lawyer, Andrew H Bart, argued that if the contract did not give a specific right to the recording artists, that right was retained by the producer.

Controversial

Spector and Greenfield divorced in 1974 after being married for six years.

Spector is one of the industry's best known and controversial figures.

He collaborated with The Ramones in a somewhat strained relationship.

"A virtual recluse for 30 years, he now faces a very public trial"
