TV channel refuses to pull photos of Diana's death

LONDON: Prince William and Prince Harry are extremely disappointed that a British television channel has ignored their pleas not to screen graphic photos of their mother's death in a Paris car crash 10 years ago, their private secretary has said.

Despite a plea from the princes, Channel 4 said it would include pictures of the crash that killed Princess Diana in a documentary that was due to be aired yesterday.

Clarence House had published a letter on behalf of the princes asking for photographs of the crash scene, which would cause "gross disrespect" to their mother's memory, to be removed from the program.

In the letter, their private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, said: "They will cause the princes acute distress if they are shown to a public audience … in the sense of intruding upon the privacy and dignity of her last minutes."

Clarence House protested after Channel 4 took what it said was an unprecedented decision last week to arrange a private viewing for Mr Lowther-Pinkerton and the princes' communications secretary, Paddy Harverson, in light of the extensive press coverage. After watching the program, they briefed the princes and sent a letter to Channel 4 with a deadline of 9am on Monday to reply.

In a long reply Kevin Lygo, Channel 4's director of television and content, defended the inclusion of the photographs as crucial to the program's analysis and said that acceding to their removal would have created a dangerous precedent.

He said: "This is in our view a legitimate media analysis of events which, whilst inevitably personally distressing, concerns matters of immense public interest."

The program, Diana: The Witnesses in the Tunnel, through reconstruction, archive footage, still images and witness accounts, tells the story of the photographers who were blamed by many for hounding her to death. Channel 4 said some of the contentious pictures had already appeared elsewhere.

    Princes disappointed over Diana film

    Wed Jun 6, 2007 9:44AM BST

    By Paul Majendie

LONDON (Reuters) - The sons of Princess Diana are "extremely disappointed" that Channel 4 has ignored their pleas not to screen graphic photos in a documentary about her death in a Paris car crash 10 years ago.

Princes William and Harry, who have begged the media to leave their mother to rest in peace, called the photos "a gross disrespect to their mother's memory."

But Channel 4 said it had weighed the princes' concerns against the legitimate public interest and decided to press ahead with plans to broadcast "Diana: The Witnesses in the Tunnel" on Wednesday evening.

"The princes are extremely disappointed at Channel 4's decision to go ahead with the programme," a spokesman for William and Harry told Reuters.

Senior aide James Lowther-Pinkerton, who wrote to the station with an 11th hour appeal from the princes, said: "It's the scene of their mother's last moment on Earth. It's an invasion of their privacy."

In the light of extensive press coverage in the lead-up to the broadcast, Lowther-Pinkerton and the princes' communications secretary Paddy Harverson had asked for a private viewing of the film. They briefed the princes afterwards.

The decision of the channel to go ahead has sharply divided opinion.

The Conservative Party said the broadcaster should have heeded the royal intervention. The Liberal Democrats said there was legitimate public interest.

    Dipping Into Retirement Funds
    Michelle Singletary

In many of my online discussions, someone usually asks about taking money out of a retirement account to pay down debt, buy a car or cover for some other financial need. Simply put, this is a bad idea.

But what about when you're unemployed and desperately in need of cash? My colleague, Martha M. Hamilton, who writes the Financial Futures column, tackled this subject in her column this week. It's still a bad idea, but in "Keep Your Money Working Even When You're Not" (May 27), she outlines some options.

Hamilton will host a Web chattoday at Noon ET with Barry Glassman, a financial adviser. Together, they will discuss the consequences of withdrawing funds early from IRAs or 401(k) plans and answer other retirement-related money questions.
