La Toya claims Jacko was murdered

Press Association
Michael Jackson's sister La Toya believes the King of Pop was effectively "murdered" for his money by a manipulative entourage, it emerged tonight.

In interviews with Sunday newspapers, La Toya gave details about the 50-year-old singer's sudden death, drugs found in his body and a stash of cash and jewels that she claims have gone missing.

She told the News of the World: "We don't think just one person was involved in the murder. It was a conspiracy to get Michael's money."

La Toya, 53, accused a "shadowy" group of hangers-on of cutting him off from his family and friends and forcing him to sign up for 50 concerts at London's O2 arena.

They also fed him drugs and saw him as a "cash cow", she claimed.

"He was surrounded by a bad circle," she told the Mail on Sunday. "Michael was a very meek, quiet, loving person. People took advantage of that.

"People fought to be close to him, people who weren't always on his side.

"Michael was worth more than a billion dollars. When anyone is worth that much money, there are always greedy people around them."

Jackson daughter: 'I love him so much'

INT
Michael Jackson's daughter paid an emotional tribute to her father at his star-studded memorial service in LA.

Tearful Paris Michael Katherine said: "Ever since I was born, daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine and I just wanted to say I love him so much."

The 11-year-old was then embraced by her aunt Janet Jackson as tears rolled down her face.

Paris had earlier been joined by her brothers Prince Michael, 12 and Prince Michael II, 7, on stage with the rest of the Jackson family for a final tribute to the King of Pop, singing along to his charity single, We Are the World.

The trio have rarely been seen in public over the past decade, and when out with their father they wore masks or veils to shield their faces from photographers.

Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder and Usher led the emotional service for Jackson as the music world and thousands of fans joined his family to say farewell.

Jackson's brothers, each wearing a single sequined glove in homage to his signature look, carried the singer's gold-trimmed casket into the Staples Center sports arena, where the Thriller star had rehearsed the day before his death for a highly-anticipated series of comeback concerts at London's O2 Arena.

Carey performed Jackson's 1970 ballad I'll Be There and singer Smokey Robinson read out tributes from former South African president Nelson Mandela and singer Diana Ross.

Praising Jackson for triumphing over tragedy in his life, Mandela said: "Michael was a giant and a legend in the music industry and we mourn with the millions of fans worldwide.

"We also mourn with his friends and his family for the loss of our dear friend who we will miss and memories of him cherish for a very long time."

The message from Ross said: "Michael wanted me to be there for his children and I will be there if they ever need me - I hope today brings closure for all those who loved him. I send my love and condolences to the Jackson family."

Around 18,000 fans, who won tickets in a web lottery, crowded into Staples for the two-hour ceremony honouring Jackson, who died aged 50 on June 25 after suffering cardiac arrest at his mansion in the city.

When it was Wonder's turn, he said: "This is a moment I wished I had never seen come. Michael, I loved you and I told you that many times, so I'm at peace with that."

He dedicated his songs Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer and They Won't Go When I Go to Jackson, and was rewarded with a standing ovation inside the auditorium.

In a lighter moment, US basketball star Magic Johnson revealed to the crowd that Jackson had a soft spot for Kentucky fried chicken.

RnB singer Usher identified Jackson as his greatest inspiration and was the first artist to touch his coffin. After breaking down in tears singing Gone Too Soon, he was embraced by members of the Jackson family as he was led away from the stage.

Police had estimated that more than 250,000 people would gather outside the arena but the orderly crowds were much smaller than expected.

Family members had held a private funeral service earlier at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

The ceremonies come as the courts untangle the future of Jackson's estate and police investigate the circumstances of his death.

Michael Jackson concert rumours

Thursday, July 9 10:03 am ITN

As Madame Tussauds unveils a new Michael Jackson waxwork, rumours of a memorial birthday concert in London grow.

The new waxwork will be Jackson's 13th incarnation at Madame Tussauds in London and shows the singer in the pose he struck on the This Is It tour poster.

The figure will be dressed in a white v-neck t-shirt, a sparkly black jacket, black ankle-length trousers, white socks and black loafers, as well as the famous single white glove.

He stands with his arms outstretched and his trademark black fedora tipped down over his eyes.

Liz Edwards, a spokeswoman for Madame Tussauds, said: "Until recently we've had Michael depicted from his Bad era and when he announced he was going to do tour dates in London we decided that, as this was the ultimate king of pop, we wanted a new figure as a tribute to an iconic star.

"The launch date has always been the same but now that he has passed away it seems even more fitting to unveil the new statue.

"He had an amazing relationship with Madam Tussauds and to do a celebratory figure seemed fitting, it just felt right."

Meanwhile, the whereabouts of his body remain a mystery.

His final resting place has not been announced by the family, with speculation of the location ranging from a private cemetery in LA to the sprawling Neverland ranch in Santa Barbara.

Jackson's gold-plated coffin was removed from the Staples Centre in Los Angeles after Tuesday's memorial event which saw stars and his 11-year-old daughter pay emotional tributes.

Grieving Jackson Fans 'Commit Suicide'

Sky News Monday, June 29 05:34 pm
The man behind the world's biggest online Michael Jackson fan club has said heartbroken followers of the star have committed suicide because of his death.

Gary Taylor, president and owner of MJJcommunity.com, said he understood the tragedies had mostly taken place outside of the UK but he believed one may have been British.

"I know there has been an increase, I now believe the figure is 12. I believe there may have been one Briton who has taken their life," he said.

"It is a serious situation that these people are going through but Michael Jackson would never want this. He would want them to live."

Jesse Jackson, a friend of the singer, has recorded a YouTube film on the site urging fans not to "self destruct".

He said: "This is a time when hearts are heavy. There is great pain but great cause to celebrate Michael's life.

"It made Michael happy saying 'We Are The World'. Don't self destruct.

"We fall down sometimes, we get back up. That's the right thing to do. In Michael's name let's live together as brothers and sisters and not die apart as fools."

MJJcommunity.com was formed 10 years ago by Mr Taylor, a London office manager, and has more than 14,000 online users and 30 staff worldwide.

He said the singer's death had left his fans on the forum "in a surreal place".

"They can't accept it, they feel in some sort of different reality," he said.

"I'm stunned that he's dead. One minute he is coming here for concerts and the next he is gone.

"I think the funeral will be where the reality kicks in that he is gone and won't be coming back, there will be a huge depression in the fan community when that happens."

Thousands of Michael Jackson fans are expected to gather for a vigil on July 13 at the O2 Arena where the star was due to perform.

They will assemble at Canary Wharf from 1pm before moving on to the 02 from 6pm.

Jackson's ex-wife Debbie Rowe clashes with paps

ITN Wednesday, July 8 05:32 pm

Debbie Rowe, Michael Jackson's ex-wife and the mother of his two oldest children, has launched a foul-mouthed tirade against reporters in Los Angeles.

It came after they questioned her over custody rights to Prince Michael II and Paris Michael as she was leaving a restaurant.

A reporter asked: "Debbie, are you ready to fight for your kids, Debbie? Are you ready to fight for your children?" Jackson's ex-wife replied: "Don't touch me."

The reporter asks the question again but before he can finish Ms Rowe, now jabbing her finger at the camera repeats: "Don't touch me."

Then the reporter asks: "Are you ready to fight for your children?"

Ms Rowe starts to swear and says: "Are you ready to get your butt kicked? Don't ...... touch me."

When the reporter asks, "Debbie, are you ready to take a cash settlement for the kids?", she speeds away in her car.

Ms Rowe has backed out of attending the Staples Center memorial service For her ex-husband.

In a statement, Ms Rowe's attorney said that "the onslaught of media attention has made it clear her attendance would be an unnecessary distraction to an event that should focus exclusively on Michael's legacy".

"Debbie will continue to celebrate Michael's memory privately," the statement added.

The singer, who died on June 25 aged 50, left behind three children: son Michael Joseph Junior, known as Prince Michael, 12; daughter Paris Michael Katherine, 11; and son Prince Michael II, 7.

Video shows Michael Jackson's ghost?

ITN Monday, July 6 04:39 pm
Michael Jackson fans are convinced that his ghost has been captured on a video shot at his Neverland home.

A shadowy figure was caught on camera passing the end of a corridor by a news cameraman filming from the singer's bedroom.

The cameraman and a news reporter who was with him at the time failed to spot the "ghostly figure" during filming.

The apparent sighting is the latest in a number of strange rumours to emerge following the King of Pop's death nearly two weeks ago.

There's the one about Jacko being buried without his brain in a solid gold coffin.

And that he will go ahead with his world tour as a hologram.

Gertrude Pridgett or better recognized as Gertrude "Ma" Rainey was one of the many famous women blues singers. She was called "Mother of the Blue's since she was the first true blues singer and one of the female singers that performed the blues in minstrel and vaudeville shows. She was the first female to record the blues professionally when she signed a recording contract with Paramount in 1923. Between the years 1923 and 1928 she recorded 100 songs on Paramount records. In 1983, Gertrude Rainy was inducted into the Blues Foundation's Blue Hall of Fame.
Bessie Smith was another one of the famous blues singers of the 1920s and 30s and was called the "Empress of the Blues." She began her professional career in the year 1912 when she joined the Rabbit Foot Minstrels led by Gertrude "Ma" Rainey. Before long she signed with Columbia's records and had major hits called Down Hearted Blues and Gulf Coast Blues. She went on to record more then 150 songs. Some were so popular that as many as 150,000 copies sold in a week. Her broad expressive range was only one of her many qualities that made her an outstanding blues singer.
A popular blues singer in the 1920s was Ida Cox. She was only 14 when she joined traveling vaudeville shows. Ida began a recording contract in 1923 with Paramount. Her first blues recordings were called "Graveyard Dream Blues" and Weary Way Blues." She wrote many of her own songs. She often recorded songs for Paramount with her Blues pianist husband Jesse Crump. Some of the songs she performed with her husband were Bone Orchard Blues, Black Crepe Blues and Worn Down Daddy.
Alberta Hunter was one the famous women blues singers. Her career flourished in the 1920s and 30s. She was a songwriter as well as a blues singer. She wrote Downhearted Blues in 1923 for Bessie Smith and it was a big hit. Alberta also appeared in New York and London clubs and on stage in musicals. Her recording career began in New York in 1921 where she recorded for the Black Swan Label. In 1922 she started to record with Paramount. In 1927 she went to Europe where she sang in musical revues. She became famous there and stayed for many years. In 1956 she retired from singing and became a nurse. She resumed her singing career in 1977.
Ethel Waters was also one of the famous women blues singers. At seventeen, Ethel was discovered by Braxton and Nugent when they heard her sing at the apartments where she was employed. They paid her $10.00 a week to work in their vaudeville unit. She had a low and clear voice and audiences felt her emotions when she sang. Between 1921 and 1924 she recorded songs for the Black Swan label. She was signed on with Columbia records in 1925. The type of voice she had gave her the ability to sing many different types of music including jazz. She also became a dramatic actress.

Obama eyes tighter controls on banks, Wall Street

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is ready to roll out an overhaul of the intricate rules and systems that govern America's troubled financial institutions, proposing the most ambitious revision since the Great Depression. The goal is to prevent a recurrence of the economic crisis that erupted in the United States and exploded last fall with devastating consequences still reverberating around the world. Unlike the government's temporary ownership stake in automakers and major financial companies, the regulatory changes set to be announced Wednesday are designed to be permanent. They could result in a major realignment of power and authority among government agencies that set the rules for banking, lending and investing and touch American lives through daily transactions, from credit cards to mortgages and mutual funds. The proposals already are the source of a spirited debate in Congress over whether Obama's measures will prove too timid or place too heavy a hand on the levers of capitalism.
At issue is a 21st century system of high-stakes swaps and trades, bets and losses where trillions of dollars worth of investment products have grown too intricate for a 20th century regulatory structure. Imagine today's financial transactions as an athletic contest where the referees have lost their vantage point. Plays occur out of their sight and fouls go undetected. Some referees halt play while others let it go on. Even the players have had enough. "On a macro-basis, we're very supportive of reform," said Tim Ryan, president and chief executive of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. In devising new regulations and oversight, the administration is looking to address four perceived weaknesses in the current system:

_The lack of an all-seeing federal entity to detect institutional stresses that threaten the financial system, and the government's inability to step in and unwind large institutions before they choke the system. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. can do this with banks. But the government lacked the power to do the same with a behemoth such as the insurer American International Group Inc.

_The undercapitalization of large financial institutions. Heading into the financial crisis, too many banks were leveraged with significantly more debt than equity. "If you give people enough leverage, they can lose an unbelievably large amount of their own money and that of their clients," Obama's chief economic adviser, Lawrence Summers, said last week. The emergence of large, lightly regulated markets, such as hedge funds, and of big insurers, such as AIG, without a federal overseer. The administration wants large private investment funds to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission and is weighing the creation of a federal charter for insurance firms. Consumers and lenders whose unwitting or reckless credit and borrowing decisions placed families under staggering debts and contributed to the instability of the financial system. Obama is likely to recommend creating a financial services consumer protection body with oversight powers over mortgages and credit cards and other consumer financial products. Internally, the administration has vacillated over whether to streamline the vast array of regulatory agencies. At one point, Treasury and White House officials floated the idea of a single financial services regulator to oversee banks and certain insurers. But it didn't get a warm reception from the chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee or the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. The administration backed away from the idea. But last week, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., a key player in financial issues, called on Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to include a single banking regulator in the administration's overhaul plan. House Republicans want streamlining, too, but would take power away from the Federal Reserve and the FDIC. The administration considered merging the Securities and Exchange Commission, the powerful stock market regulator, and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission, which oversees commodity futures and some options markets. But the move would have meant congressional and regulatory turf battles. At a dinner two weeks ago, Geithner told key lawmakers he would not propose the merger.  "The Obama administration — because they're working in a more realistic environment — are into the art of the possible," Ryan said.

One way or another, the Fed could be a winner in the administration's plan.  The administration and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke would like the central bank to be the overarching "systemic risk" regulator, lording over the financial system in search of flaws and weak stress points. Such a role would give the Fed exceptional authority as both the manager of monetary policy and the overseer of the enterprises with the biggest financial footprint in the country, if not the world.  Industry officials now expect Obama and Geithner to propose a system that makes the Fed a supervisor of systemic risk assisted by a council of regulators that would advise the central bank about potential dangers.  Also in the debate is how to handle failing institutions that pose a threat to the entire financial system. The administration wants a beefed up FDIC to carry out that function provided such intervention is triggered by Fed or Treasury regulators.  Republicans prefer that companies be restructured or liquidated in bankruptcy court.  Alabama Rep. Spencer Bachus, the top Republican on the House Financial Services Committee, urged lawmakers to reject a regulatory system "that depends on the infallibility of the government regulators, who have so far shown themselves unable to anticipate crisis, let alone prevent them."  In a speech Friday to the Council on Foreign Relations, Summers offered the administration's counterpoint: "Any financial institution that is big enough, interconnected enough or risky enough that its distress necessitates government writing substantial checks, is big enough, risky enough or interconnected enough that it should be some part of the government's responsibility to supervise it on a comprehensive basis."

This Thursday, May 21, South Congress St. Bridge, 7PM - We are having one final public appearance before the MALI Festival. We'll be hanging out together underneath the South Congress Bridge, with the Austin Bat Colony. Yes, real bats! They were kind enough to pose for our band poster. We'll be jamming, selling festival tickets, and painting together on the Creature Community Canvas! Come out and paint at sunset with the band. They might give you some cake.
And tomorrow, tune in to KOOP 91.7FM, at 11am to hear another local artist, Joanna Barbera and the director of the M.A.L.I Festival, P.O.W., do an in-studio interview on "What's a girl to do?"

The Tribecca started with a simple goal: to bring a little life back to the streets of Tribecca a fashionable part of Manhattan, New York. That seemed easier said than done in late 2001, when co-founders Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff agreed to put their long-percolating Tribecca Film Festival idea into action. Not only had the tragedy of September 11 cast a shadow over the payment, but the resulting relocation of businesses and their employees formt he area, as well as residents who's lost their homes
int he neighborhood, meant dark days for local merchants. Restaurants and shops were closing their doors daily.
"At the time, the world didn't need another film festival, but Tribeca did - we needed to get people downtown," says Rosenthal, who cites the showcasing of films as an almost secondary desires in those early days. "It was about bringing the community back outside, back together."

"Businesses were suffereing, the neiborhood was suffering. What we were thinking about was, we must help."
John Hayes, American Express Chief Marketing Officer

In the heart of that community was American Express and its employees, some 4,000 of whom had been forced to leave their downtown offices after the attacks and were now working in auxiliary spaces around the tri-state area.
" Busineses were suffering, the neighborhood was suffering. What we were thinking about was. we must held," recalls John Hayes, Amex's Chief Marketing Officer. The compnay had already announced that it would move its headquarters back to lower Manhattan, "Jane, Bob and Craig really wanted to bring the energy back, the community back. We shared their vision, Hayes says. " We knew that the festival had the potential to be extremely powerful. Our goals were to drive business to merchants who were hurting, give platforms for filmmakers to tell their stories broadly, and create amazing experiences for our Cardmembers who are passionate about film.
As it turned out, a lot of others brought into the visions, too. Attendees on the inaugral fest's opening day included former President Bill Clinnton and former South African president Nelson Mandela, in addition to film world luminaries, , such as Marin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. As projectors rolled, it seemed the whole world was on its way downtown, including filmmakers, actors and politicos from around the globe, and perhaps most importantly, those 4,000 American Express employees and scores of New Yorkers from around the city.
Actor Hugh Grant, star of the De Niro/Rosenthal-produced About a Boy, which premiered at the Festival, predicted it is his own charming way at the opening dat press conference, saying that TFF'02 would be a "shot of vitamin B-12 in the buttocks" of Manhattan. He was right: That first year, TFF infised $10.5 million into the borough's economically stilted lower reaches. Since its launch, the Tribeca Film Festival has grown exponentially, and has screened more than 1,100 films from at least 80 countries and attracted more than 2 million attendees, all while generating more than $530 million in economic activity for the city of New York.
American Express, the fest's first sponsor, has been a part of the expansion year after year and is focused on supporting filmmaking while providing special experiences for Cardmembers, including advance ticketsales, film talks and special screenings, and connecting filmgoers with local restauranteurs and shopkeepers through Cardmember offers. (Other TFF sponsors include the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, AMCtv, Apple, Bloomberg, Brookfield Properties, Borough of Manhattan Community College, Delta Airlines, DIRCTTV, Heineken, iShares, NBC 4 New York, RR Donnelly, Snapple, The New York Times, Telemundo 47 and Vanity Fair). Also helping to drive business downtown are the numerous free and family-friendly events like the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival and the Tribeca Drive-In.
"We're happy when this time of year comes around", says Drew Nieporent, owner of local favorites like Nobu and the Tribeca Grill. "What they have built here is just totally positive, good-feeling event."
Contribitions from neighbors and friends have been paramount to the festival's tone and success. Contemporary artist Stephen Hancock has donated a painting every year since the festival's inception. The works, presented to award winning filmmakers, are the Tribeca equivalent of shiny statuettes, and in many people's opinions are more meaningful than the coverted cash prizes. " I 've heard from many film makers a year or more after winning their prize, " Hancock says. " They realize that an actual community has recognised their efforts, thanking them for participating and making their art."
And then there is the life-changing award of being seen, which the festival excels at offereing to participants. " We got our first paid job as a result of the exposure at Tribeca," says John Dowdle, who with his brother Drew premiered their feature The Ploughkeepsie Tapes, as upstate New York-based "faux doc" about a serial killer. at TFF'07. The flick was purchased by MGM two weeks later and before the L.A. 0 based team headed home from the festival, they'd been approached to write 2008's Quarantine, which John also directer. The brothers return in 2009 with Transcendent Man, a documentary they produced about Ray Kurzwell, inventor and the bestselling author of The Singularity is Near: When Humans Transend Biology.
Given the economic horizon this year, the festival may bear fewer such deals than they have in the past. "the world had changed," Rosenthal says, "There are fewer distribution companies, and it will be harder to have that frenzy."
Of course, inside the theater, sitting shoulder to-shoulder with fellow filmlovers, the realities outside are easier to forget. "We like to think we're doing our part to install confidence, hope and inspiration in individuals, especially in these tough times, "
Rosenthal says.
Movies, take us away!

At the strong and powerful Solidarity for peace rally in Edinburgh on Saturday the 10th January, 2009,
they had some very powerful and moving speakers at the end rally in the park and thousands braving cold winds and
rain to listen to the speakers, which included a doctor who spoke live form a mobile telephone from Gaza describing
to the crowd of the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza caused for the relentless bombing of Gaza by Israel.

The ordinary citizens from all nationalities, ages and backgrounds from all countries spoke out in a loud unity voice

it has the potential to create a third world war and help ignite a new round of world wide hatred in the world between

    stated to the BBC...

that both sides were "wrong" and a total ceasefire was the only sensible solution."

    Annie said

"the intervention of President George W Bush, who has described Hamas's rocket attacks as an "act of terror", was not helping the situation."

She said: "The problem is, from my perspective, they are pouring petrol onto the fire.

"They have to sit down. This is a small window of opportunity just before things kick off.

"For every one person killed in Gaza, they are creating 100 suicide bombers. It's not just about Gaza, it's about all of us.
