The preparations for Dec. 21, 2012, the day the world is supposed to end according to ancient Mayan predictions are well underway in China. According to Laurie Burkitt of The Wall Street Journal, people across the nation are getting ready for the coming Armageddon by reserving fictional tickets to escape on a modern day version of Noah's Ark. The escape from Earth is based off the movie "2012," a 2009 science fiction disaster film in which international leaders build a series of arks in China to save humanity from a cataclysmic ending
.
Chinese online shopping portal, Taobao, has several online stores selling these tickets at 3 RMB a piece. The tickets have been popular as a new year’s gift, a comical way of ensuring one’s safety in the face of the 2012 Armageddon. Thousands of tickets have been sold so far. Physical stores are printing up and selling these tickets, too. One store in Jingsau has sold 2,500 train and ark tickets at 3 RMB each. Another one sold 1,700 Chinese Noah’s Ark passes in a month, at 2 RMB each.
Although there are several versions of the ticket, the information on all of them remains consistent – the boarding time, which is midnight on December 21st 2012, and the boarding place, at Zhuo Ming Gu dock. This is the same information that is talked about in the movie 2012. Cabin seats and ticket numbers have also been included. To make the tickets look real, some stores have introduced ticketing# n systems that allow the customers to enter their name, nationality and other information on their tickets.
Whilst this may bring a sense of humour in observing the reaction of people to a supposed incoming doomsday, intelligence agencies don't necessarily see possible reactions to doomsday events as humorous. In fact during 1999 and the run up to the end of the twentieth century, an infamous project was leaked to the public which revealed that the FBI had built a model of intelligence measures to cater for what they believed to be the threat caused by religious groups with a heavy apocalyptic doomsday focus. We examine this to see if this historical report offers clues as to what to possibly expect for December 2012.

All the best now.
Enjoy the read.

Mass Media the Most Powerful Tool Used by Ruling Class

"...Imagine living in a world without mothers and fathers, a place full of faceless human clones. This is the society portrayed in Aldous Huxley's 1932 novel entitled Brave New World. "...A famous example of subliminal messaging in political communications is in George Bush’s TV advertisement against Al Gore in 2000.

Right after the name of Gore is mentioned, the ending of the word “bureaucrats” – “rats” – flashes on the screen for a split second...."

OCCULT SYMBOLISM IN POP CULTURE

Contrarily to the information presented above, documentation on occult symbolism is rather hard to find. This should not come as a surprise as the term “occult”, literally means “hidden”. It also means “reserved to those in the know” as it is only
communicated to those who are deemed worthy of the knowledge. It is not taught in schools nor is it discussed in the media. It is thus considered marginal or even ridiculous by the general population.
Occult knowledge is not, however, considered ridiculous in occult circles. It is considered timeless and sacred. There is a long tradition of hermetic and occult knowledge being taught through secret societies originating from ancient Egyptians, to Eastern Mystics, to the Knights Templar to modern day Freemasons. Even if the nature and the depth
of this knowledge was most probably modified and altered throughout the centuries, mystery schools kept their main features, which are highly symbolic, ritualistic and metaphysical. Those characteristics, which were an intricate part of ancient civilizations, have totally been evacuated from modern society to be replaced by pragmatic materialism. For this reason, there lies an important gap of understanding between the pragmatic average person and the ritualistic establishment.
“If this inner doctrine were always concealed from the masses, for whom a simpler code had been devised, is it not highly probable that the exponents of every aspect of modern civilization – philosophic, ethical, religious, and scientific-are ignorant of the true meaning of the very theories and tenets on which their beliefs are founded? Do the arts and
sciences that the race has inherited from older nations conceal beneath their fair exterior a mystery so great that only the most illumined intellect can grasp its import? Such is undoubtedly the case.”
- Manly P. Hall, Secret Teachings of All Ages

The “simpler code” devised for the masses used to be organized religions.
It is now becoming the Temple of the Mass Media and it preaches on a daily
basis extreme materialism, spiritual vacuosity and a selfcentered,
individualistic existence. This is exactly the opposite of the attributes required to become a truly free individual, as taught by all great philosophical schools of thought. Is a dumbed-down population easier to deceive and to manipulate?

“These blind slaves are told they are “free” and “highly educated” even as they march behind signs that would cause any medieval peasant to run screaming away from them in panic-stricken terror.

The symbols that modern man embraces with the naive trust of an infant would be tantamount to billboards reading, ‘This way to your death and enslavement,’ to the understanding of the traditional peasant of antiquity”

Mass media is the most powerful tool used by the ruling class to manipulate the masses.

It shapes and molds opinions and attitudes and defines what is normal and acceptable. This edition looks at the workings of mass media through the theories of its major thinkers, its power structure and the techniques it uses, in order to understand its true role in society.
There is no greater power in the world today than that wielded by the manipulators of public opinion. No king or pope of old, no conquering general or high priest ever disposed of a power even remotely approaching that of the few dozen men who control the global mass media of news and entertainment.
Their power is not distant and impersonal; it reaches into millions of homes and it works its will during nearly every waking hour. It is the power that shapes and molds the mind of virtually every citizen, young or old, rich or poor, simple or sophisticated.
The mass media form for us our image of the world and then tell us what to think about that image.
Essentially everything we know—or think we know—about events outside our own neighborhood or circle of acquaintances comes to us via our daily newspaper, our weekly news magazine, our radio, or our television.
It is not just the heavy-handed suppression of certain news stories from our newspapers or the blatant propagandizing of history-distorting TV "docudramas" that characterizes the opinion-manipulating techniques of the media masters. They exercise both subtlety and thoroughness in their management of
the news and the entertainment that they present to us.
For example, the way in which the news is covered: which items are emphasized and which are played down; the reporter's choice of words, tone of voice, and facial expressions; the wording of headlines; the choice of illustrations—all of these things subliminally and yet profoundly affect the way in which we interpret what we see or hear.
On top of this, of course, the columnists and editors remove any remaining doubt from our minds as to just what we are to think about it all. Employing carefully developed psychological techniques, they guide our thought and opinion so that we can be in tune with the "in" crowd, the "beautiful people," the "smart money." They let us know exactly what our attitudes should be toward various types of people and behavior by placing those people or that behavior in the context of a TV drama or situation comedy and having the other TV characters react in the politically correct way.
This edition of the Vision Report Watch reviews some of the strategies employed and those men who were the originators of these strategies.

Mass media are media forms designed to reach the largest audience possible. They include television, movies, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, nrecords, video games and the internet. Many studies have been conducted in the past century to measure the effects of mass media on the population in order to discover the best techniques to influence it. From those studies emerged the science of Communications, which is used in marketing, public relations and politics. Mass communication is a necessary tool to insure the functionality of a large democracy; it is also a necessary tool for a dictatorship. It all depends on its usage.
In the 1958 preface for A Brave New World, Aldous Huxley paints a rather grim portrait of society. He believes it is controlled by an “impersonal force”, a ruling elite, which manipulates the population using various methods.
“Impersonal forces over which we have almost no control seem to be pushing us all in the direction of the Brave New Worldian nightmare; and this impersonal pushing is being consciously accelerated by representatives of commercial and political organizations who have developed a number of new techniques for manipulating, in the interest of some minority, the thoughts and feelings of the masses.”
- Aldous Huxley, Preface to A Brave New World His bleak outlook is not a simple hypothesis or a paranoid delusion. It is a documented fact, present in the world’s most important studies on mass media. Here are some of them:
Walter Lippmann, an American intellectual, writer and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner brought forth one of the first works concerning the usage of mass media in America. In Public Opinion (1922), Lippmann compared the masses to a “great b e a s t ” and a “bewildered herd” that needed to be guided by a governing class. He described the ruling
elite as “a specialized class whose interests reach beyond the locality.”
This class is composed of experts, specialists and bureaucrats. According to Lippmann, the experts, who often are referred to as “elites,” are to be a machinery of knowledge that circumvents the primary defect of democracy, the impossible ideal of the “omnicompetent citizen.” The trampling and roaring “bewildered herd” has its function: to be “the interested spectators of action,” i.e. not participants.
Participation is the duty of “the responsible man”, which is not the regular citizen.
Mass media and propaganda are therefore tools that must be used by the elite to rule the public without physical coercion. One important concept presented by Lippmann is the “manufacture of consent”, which is, in short, the manipulation of public opinion to accept the elite’s agenda. It is Lippmann’s opinion that the general public is not qualified to reason and to decide on important issues. It is therefore important for the elite to decide ”for its own good” and then sell those decisions to the masses.
“That the manufacture of consent is capable of great refinements no one, I think, denies. The process by which public opinions arise is certainly no less intricate than it has appeared in these pages, and the opportunities for manipulation open to anyone who understands the process are plain enough. . . . as a result of psychological research,
coupled with the modern means of communication, the practice of democracy has turned a corner. A revolution is taking place, infinitely more significant
than any shifting of economic power. . . . Under the impact of propaganda, not necessarily in the sinister meaning of the word alone, the old constants of our thinking have become variables. It is no longer possible, for example, to believe in the original dogma of democracy; that the knowledge needed for the management of human affairs comes up spontaneously from the human heart. Where we act on that theory we expose ourselves to self deception, and to forms of persuasion that we cannot verify. It has been demonstrated that we cannot rely upon intuition, conscience, or the accidents of casual opinion if we are to deal with the world beyond our reach.”
–Walter Lippmann, Public Opinion

It might be interesting to note that Lippmann is one of the founding fathers of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the most influential foreign policy think tank in the world. This fact should give you a small hint of the mind state of the elite concerning
the usage of media. “Political and economic power in the United States is concentrated in the hands of a “ruling elite” that controls most of U.S.-based multinational corporations, major communication media, the most influential foundations, major private universities
and most public utilities.
Founded in 1921, the Council of Foreign Relations is the key link between the large corporations and the federal government. It has been called a “school for statesmen” and “comes close to being an organ of what C. Wright Mills has called the Power Elite –
a group of men, similar in interest and outlook shaping events from invulnerable positions behind the scenes. The creation of the United Nations was a Council project, as well as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.”
- Steve Jacobson, Mind Control in the United States
Some current members of the CFR include David Rockefeller, Dick Cheney, Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton, mega-church pastor Rick Warren and the CEOs of major corporations such as CBS, Nike, Coca-Cola and Visa.

Carl Jung is the founder of analytical psychology (also known an Jungian psychology), which emphasizes understanding the psyche by exploring dreams, art, mythology, religion, symbols and philosophy. The Swiss therapist is at the origin of many psychological concepts used today such as the Archetype, the Complex, the Persona, the
Introvert/Extrovert and Synchronicity. He was highly influenced by the occult background of his family. Carl Gustav, his grandfather, was an avid Freemason (he was Grand Master) and Jung himself discovered that some of his ancestors were Rosicrucians. This might explain his great interest in Eastern and Western philosophy, alchemy, astrology and symbolism. One of his most important (and misunderstood) concept was the
Collective Unconscious.
“My thesis, then, is as follows: In addition to our immediate consciousness, which is of a thoroughly personal nature and which we believe to be the only empirical psyche (even if we tack on the personal unconscious as an appendix), there exists a second
psychic system of a collective, universal, and impersonal nature which is identical in all
individuals. This collective unconscious does not develop individually but is inherited. It consists of pre-existent forms, the archetypes, which can only become conscious secondarily and which give definite form to certain psychic contents.”
- Carl Jung, The Concept of the Collective Unconscious

The collective unconscious transpires through the existence of similar symbols and mythological figures in different civilizations. Archetypal symbols seem to be embedded in our collective subconscious, and, when exposed to them, we demonstrate natural attraction and fascination.
Occult symbols can therefore exert a great impact on people, even if many individuals were never personally introduced to the symbol’s esoteric meaning. Mass media thinkers, such as Edward D. Bernays, found in this concept a great way to manipulate the public’s personal and collective unconscious.

EWARD BERNAYS
Edward Bernays is considered to be the “father of public relations” and used concepts discovered by his uncle Sigmund Freud to manipulate the public using the subconscious. He shared Walter Lippmann’s view of the general population by considering it irrational and subject to the “herd instinct”. In his opinion, the masses need to be manipulated by an invisible government to insure the survival of democracy.
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true
ruling power of our country.
We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized.
Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society.
Our invisible governors are, in many cases, unaware of the identity of their fellow members in the inner cabinet.”

- Edward Bernays, Propaganda
Bernay’s trailblazing marketing campaigns profoundly changed the functioning of American
society. He basically created “consumerism” by creating a culture wherein Americans bought for pleasure instead of buying for survival. For this reason, he was considered by Life Magazine to be in the Top 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century.

HAROLD LASSWELL
In 1939-1940, the University of Chicago was the host of a series of secret seminars on
communications. These think tanks were funded by the Rockefeller foundation and involved the most prominent researchers in the fields of communications and sociological studies. One of these scholars was Harold Lasswell, a leading American political scientist and communications theorist, specializing in the analysis of propaganda.
He was also of the opinion that a democracy, a government ruled by the people, could not sustain itself without a specialized elite shaping and molding public opinion through propaganda.
In his Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences, Lasswell explained that when elites lack the
requisite force to compel obedience, social managers must turn to “a whole new technique of control, largely through propaganda.” He added the conventional justification: we must recognize the “ignorance and stupidity [of] … the masses and not succumb to democratic dogmatisms about men being the best judges of their own interests.”
Lasswell extensively studied the field of content analysis in order to understand the effectiveness of different types of propaganda. In his essay Contents of Communication, Lasswell explained that, in order to understand the meaning of a message (i.e. a movie, a speech, a book, etc.), one should take into account the frequency with which certain symbols appear in the message, the direction in which the symbols try to persuade the audience’s opinion, and the intensity of the symbols used.

Lasswell was famous for his media analysis model
based on: Who (says) What (to) Whom (in) What Channel (with) What Effect
By this model, Lasswell indicates that in order to properly analyze a media product, one must look at who produced the product (the people who ordered its creation), who was it aimed at (the target audience) and what were the desired effects of this product (to inform, to convince, to sell, etc.) on the audience.
Using a Rihanna video as an example, the analysis would be as follows: WHO PRODUCED: Vivendi Universal; WHAT: pop artist Rihanna; TO WHOM:
consumers between the ages of 9 and 25; WHAT CHANNEL: music video; and WHAT EFFECT: selling the artist, her song, her image and her message.
The analysis of celebrity videos and movies places a great importance on the “who is behind” the messages communicated to the public. The term “Illuminati” is often used to describe this small elite group covertly ruling the masses. Although the term
sounds quite caricatured and conspiratorial, it aptlydescribes the elite’s affinities with secret societies and occult knowledge.
However, I personally detest using the term “conspiracy theory” to describe what is happening in the mass media. If all the facts concerning the elitist nature of the industry are readily available to the public, can it still be considered a “conspiracy
theory”?
There used to be a variety of viewpoints, ideas and opinions in popular culture. The consolidation of media corporations has, however, produced a standardization of the cultural industry. Ever wondered why all recent music sounds the same and all recent movies look the same? The following is part of the answer:
MEDIA OWNERSHIP
As depicted in the graph above, the number of corporations owning the majority of U.S. media outlets went from 50 to 5 in less than 20 years. Here are the top corporations evolving around the world and the assets they own.
“A list of the properties controlled by AOL Time Warner takes ten typed pages listing 292 separate companies and subsidiaries. Of these, twenty-two are joint ventures with other major corporations involved in varying degrees with media operations.
These partners include 3Com, eBay, Hewlett-Packard, Citigroup, Ticketmaster, American
Express, Homestore, Sony, Viva, Bertelsmann, Polygram, and Amazon.com. Some of the more familiar fully owned properties of Time Warner include Book-of-the-Month Club; Little, Brown publishers; HBO, with its seven channels; CNN;
seven specialized and foreign-language channels; Road Runner; Warner Brothers Studios; Weight
Watchers; Popular Science; and fifty-two different record labels.”
- Ben Bagdikan, The New Media Monopoly

AOL Time Warner owns:
64 magazines, including Time, Life, People, MAD
Magazine and DC Comics
Warner Bros, New Line and Fine Line Features in
cinema
More than 40 music labels including Warner
Bros, Atlantic and Elektra
Many television networks such as WB Networks,
HBO, Cinemax, TNT, Cartoon Network and CNN
Madonna, Sean Paul, The White Stripes

Viacom owns:
CBS, MTV, MTV2, UPN, VH1, Showtime,
Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, TNN, CMT and
BET
Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies, MTV
Films
1800 screens in theaters through Famous
Players

“Disney ownership of a hockey team called The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim does not begin to describe the vastness of the kingdom. Hollywood is still its symbolic heart, with eight movie production studios and distributors: Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Miramax, Buena Vista Home Video, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Buena
Vista International, Hollywood Pictures, and Caravan Pictures.

The Walt Disney Company controls eight book house imprints under Walt Disney Company Book Publishing and ABC Publishing Group; seventeen magazines; the ABC Television Network, with ten owned and operated stations of its own including in the five top markets; thirty radio stations, including all the major markets; eleven cable channels,
including Disney, ESPN (jointly), A&E, and the History Channel; thirteen international broadcast channels stretching from Australia to Brazil; seven production and sports units around the world; and seventeen Internet sites, including the ABC group, ESPN.sportszone, NFL.com, NBAZ.com, and NASCAR.com. Its five music groups include the Buena Vista, Lyric Street, and Walt Disney labels, and live theater productions growing out of the movies The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and King David.”

The Walt Disney Company owns:
ABC, Disney Channel, ESPN, A&E, History Channel Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax Film Corp., Dimension and Buena Vista International Miley Cyrus/ Hannah Montana, Selena Gomez, Jonas Brothers

Sony owns:
Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures
Classics
15% of US Music sales, labels include Columbia,
Epic, Sony, Arista, Jive and RCA Records
Beyonce, Shakira, Previously Michael Jackson,
Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera
A limited number of actors in the cultural industry means a limited amount of viewpoints and ideas making their way to the general public. It also means that a single message can easily saturate all forms of media to generate consent (i.e. “there are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq”).

HUMAN THOUGHT STANDARDISATION
The merger of media companies in the last decades generated a small oligarchy of media
conglomerates. The TV shows we follow, the music we listen to, the movies we watch and the newspapers we read are all produced by FIVE corporations. The owners of those conglomerates have close ties with the world’s elite and, in many ways, they are the elite. By owning all of the possible outlets having the potential to reach the masses, these conglomerates have the power to create in the minds of the people a single and
cohesive world view, engendering a “standardization of human thought”.
Even movements or styles that are considered marginal are, in fact, extensions of mainstream thinking. Mass medias produce their own rebels who definitely look the part but are still part of the establishment and do not question any of it. Artists,
creations and ideas that do not fit the mainstream way of thinking are mercilessly rejected and forgotten by the conglomerates, which in turn makes them virtually disappear from society itself.
However, ideas that are deemed to be valid and desirable to be accepted by society are skilfully marketed to the masses in order to make them become self-evident norm.
In 1928, Edward Bernays already saw the immense potential of motion pictures to standardize thought:
“The American motion picture is the greatest unconscious carrier of propaganda in the world today. It is a great distributor for ideas and opinions.
The motion picture can standardize the ideas and habits of a nation. Because pictures are made to meet market demands, they reflect, emphasize and even exaggerate broad popular tendencies, rather than stimulate new ideas and opinions. The motion picture avails itself only of ideas and facts which are in vogue. As the newspaper seeks to purvey news, it seeks to purvey entertainment.”
– Edward Bernays, Propaganda

These facts were flagged as dangers to human freedom in the 1930′s by thinkers of the school of Frankfurt such as Theodor Adorno and Herbert Marcuse. They identified three main problems with the cultural industry. The industry can:
1. reduce human beings to the state of mass by hindering the development of emancipated
individuals, who are capable of making rational decisions;
2. replace the legitimate drive for autonomy and self -awareness by the safe laziness of conformism and passivity; and
3. validate the idea that men actually seek to escape the absurd and cruel world in which they live by losing themselves in a hypnotic state self satisfaction.
The notion of escapism is even more relevant today with advent of online video games, 3D movies and home theaters. The masses, constantly seeking state-of-the-art entertainment, will resort to high budget products that can only be produced by the biggest media corporations of the world. Theseproducts contain carefully calculated messages and
symbols which are nothing more and nothing less than entertaining propaganda. The public have been trained to LOVE its propaganda to the extent that it spends its hard-earned money to be exposed to it. Propaganda (used in both political, cultural and
commercial sense) is no longer the coercive or authoritative communication form found in
dictatorships: it has become the synonym of entertainment and pleasure.
“In regard to propaganda the early advocates of universal literacy and a free press envisaged only two possibilities: the propaganda might be true, or it might be false. They did not foresee what in fact has happened, above all in our Western capitalist
democracies — the development of a vast mass communications industry, concerned in the main neither with the true nor the false, but with the unreal, the more or less totally irrelevant. In a word, they failed to take into account man’s almost infinite
appetite for distractions.”
– Aldous Huxley, Preface to A Brave New World

A single piece of media often does not have a lasting effect on the human psyche. Mass media, however, by its omnipresent nature, creates a living environment we evolve in on a daily basis. It defines the norm and excludes the undesirable. The same way carriage horses wear blinders so they can only see what is right in front of them, the masses can
only see where they are supposed to go.
“It is the emergence of mass media which makes possible the use of propaganda techniques on a societal scale. The orchestration of press, radio and television to create a continuous, lasting and total environment renders the influence of propaganda
virtually unnoticed precisely because it creates a constant environment. Mass media provides the essential link between the individual and the demands of the technological society.”
– Jacques Ellul

One of the reasons mass media successfully influences society is due to the extensive amount of research on cognitive sciences and human nature that has been applied to it.

MANIPULATION TECHNIQUES
“Publicity is the deliberate attempt to manage the public’s perception of a subject. The subjects of publicity include people (for example, politicians and performing artists), goods and services, organizations of all kinds, and works of art or entertainment.”
The drive to sell products and ideas to the masses has lead to an unprecedented amount of research on human behavior and on the human psyche.
Cognitive sciences, psychology, sociology, semiotics, linguistics and other related fields were and still are extensively researched through well funded studies.
“No group of sociologists can approximate the ad teams in the gathering and processing of exploitable social data. The ad teams have billions to spend annually on research and
testing of reactions, and their products are magnificent accumulations of material about the shared experience and feelings of the entire community.”
- Marshal McLuhan, The Extensions of Man

The results of those studies are applied to advertisements, movies, music videos and other
media in order to make them as influential as possible. The art of marketing is highly calculated and scientific because it must reach both the individual and the collective consciousness. In highbudget cultural products, a video is never “just a video,” Images, symbols and meanings are strategically placed in order to generate a desired
effect.
“It is with knowledge of the human being, his tendencies, his desires, his needs, his psychic mechanisms, his automatisms as well as knowledge of social psychology and analytical psychology that propaganda refines its techniques.”
– Propagandes, Jacques Ellul (free translation)

Today’s propaganda almost never uses rational or logical arguments. It directly taps into a human’s most primal needs and instincts in order to generate an emotional and irrational response. If we always thought rationally, we probably wouldn’t buy 50% of what we own.
Babies and children are constantly found in advertisements targeting women for a specific
reason: studies have shown that images of children trigger in women an instinctual need to nurture, to care and to protect, ultimately leading to a sympathetic bias towards the advertisement.

Sex is ubiquitous in mass media, as it draws and keeps the viewer’s attention.

It directly connects to our animal need to breed and to reproduce, and, when triggered, this instinct can instantly overshadow any other rational thoughts in our brain.

SUBLIMINAL PERCEPTION
What if the messages described above were able to reach directly the viewers’ subconscious mind, without the viewers even realizing what is happening? That is the goal of subliminal perception. The phrase subliminal advertising was coined in 1957 by the US market researcher James Vicary, who said he could get moviegoers to “drink Coca-Cola” and “eat popcorn” by flashing those messages onscreen for such a short time that
viewers were unaware.
“Subliminal perception is a deliberate process created by communications technicians, by which you receive and respond to information and instructions without being consciously aware of the
instructions”
– Steve Jacobson, Mind Control in the United States

Although some sources claim that subliminal advertising is ineffective or even an urban myth, the documented usage of this technique in mass media proves that creators believe in its powers. Recent studies have also proven its effectiveness, especially when the message is negative.

” A team from University College London, funded by the Wellcome Trust, found that it [subliminal perception] was particularly good at instilling negative thoughts. There has been much speculation about whether people can process emotional information unconsciously, for example pictures, faces and words,” said Professor Nilli Lavie, who led the research. We have shown that people can perceive the emotional value of subliminal messages and have demonstrated conclusively that people are much more attuned to negative words.”
A famous example of subliminal messaging in political communications is in George Bush’s TV advertisement against Al Gore in 2000.

We have shown that people can perceive the emotional value of subliminal messages and have demonstrated conclusively that people are much more attuned to
negative words.”

"...A famous example of subliminal messaging in political communications is in George Bush’s TV advertisement against Al Gore in 2000.

Right after the name of Gore is mentioned, the ending of the word “bureaucrats” – “rats” – flashes on the screen for a split second...."

The discovery of this trickery caused quite a stir and, even if there are no laws against subliminal messaging in the U.S., the advertisement was taken off the air.
In the 2008 US presidential elections, John McCain the republican candidate ran a TV ad as part of his campaign creating the illusion that Barack Obama was the Antichrist. The impact of this campaign was significant. For instance in 2008 and 2009 there
were more searches on Google for the terms “Obama Antichrist” and “Obama Messiah” than any other modern day person associated with biblical
prophecy.
Mara Vanderslice who at the time headed a community based organization called Matthew 25 Network had noticed that the negative e-mails she received from conservative Christians in 2008 and 2009 had fell into two general topical categories, Obama’s views on abortion, and the assertion that Obama was the Antichrist.

DENSENSITIZATION
In the past, when changes were imposed on populations, they would take to the streets, protest and even riot. The main reason for this clash was due to the fact that the change was clearly announced by the rulers and understood by the population. It was sudden and its effects could clearly be analyzed and evaluated. Today, when the elite needs a part of its agenda to be accepted by the public, it is done through desensitization.
The agenda, which might go against the public best interests, is slowly, gradually and repetitively introduced to the world through movies (by involving it within the plot), music videos (who make it cool and sexy) or the news (who present it as a solution to today’s problems). After several years of exposing the masses to a particular agenda, the elite openly presents the concept the world and, due to mental programming, it is greeted with general indifference and is passively accepted. This technique originates from psychotherapy.
“The techniques of psychotherapy, widely practiced and accepted as a means of curing psychological disorders, are also methods of controlling people.
They can be used systematically to influence attitudes and behavior. Systematic desensitization is a method used to dissolve anxiety so the the patient (public) is no longer troubled by a specific fear, a fear of violence for example. [...] People adapt to frightening situations if they are exposed to them enough”.
– Steven Jacobson, Mind Control in the United States

Predictive programming is often found in the science fiction genre. It presents a specific image of the future – the one that is desired by the elite – and ultimately becomes in the minds of men an inevitability. A decade ago, the public was being desensitized to war against the Arab world. Today, the population is gradually being exposed to the existence of mind control, of transhumanism and of an Illuminati elite.

Emerging from the shadows, those concepts are now everywhere in popular culture. This is what Alice Bailey describes as the “externalization of the hierarchy”: the hidden rulers slowly revealing themselves.

- Michael A. Hoffman II, Secret Societies and Psychological Warfare

"...Imagine living in a world without mothers and fathers, a place full of faceless human clones. This is the society portrayed in Aldous Huxley's 1932 novel entitled Brave New World. Huxley describes a futuristic society that has an alarming effect of dehumanization. This occurs through the absence of spirituality and family, the obsession with physical pleasure, and the misuse of technology...."

Mark Zuckerberg...
the $12  Billion Dollar Boy

(after all Mark Zuckerberg is still just kid, but a very rich and powerful one)

Facebook takes Wall Street roller-coaster ride

Facebook takes Wall Street roller-coaster ride

Facebook saw roller-coaster action Friday in its first trading day as the social network with some 900 million members made one of the most eagerly awaited market debuts in history.

Facebook shares, priced at $38 on Thursday in the largest-ever initial public offering (IPO) for a technology company, jumped 12 percent to $42.55 in the opening Nasdaq trades but within minutes fell back to the offering price. At 1825 GMT, the shares were back up 6.0 percent at $40.28. Investors were expected to be hungry to get a piece of Facebook, which has become a global phenomenon since its beginnings in 2004 as a project of then-Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg and his classmates.

Social network shares tumble as Facebook trades flat
Market pop fades for Facebook
Top reasons to avoid Facebook IPO

Zuckerberg, wearing his trademark hooded sweatshirt, remotely rang the bell to open the Nasdaq, marking the historic share offering that confirms the growing importance of the social network giant. "Going public is an important milestone in our history,"
Zuckerberg told the crowd at the company's campus in Menlo Park.

"But here's the thing.

Our mission isn't to be a public company. Our mission is to make the world more open and connected." Gerard Hoberg, a University of Maryland economist, said there was enthusiasm from some buyers who like the company but skepticism from professionals. "You have a lot of bullishness from retail investors, people who use Facebook, and there's a lot of those investors creating a lot of buying pressure," he said. "But professionals who were looking at the numbers behind Facebook had a lot more doubts, and that is cooling the issue quite a bit." A report on the Business Insider financial blog said the price did not fall below $38 because of a large number of standing orders at the offering price. The Wall Street Journal said the underwriting investment banks also stepped in to support the price. Zuckerberg and hundreds of employees cheered as the 28-year-old co-founder rang the bell via video for the New York-based Nasdaq. He wore a dark hoodie, unfazed by criticism from some on Wall Street about his casual attire. And most of those on hand for the ceremony were wearing similar sweatshirts or T-shirts. The market debut appeared disappointing compared with some recent tech IPOs: the LinkedIn social network doubled on its first day last year and Groupon jumped 30 percent. But Pandora rose a more modest 8.9 percent and Zynga lost five percent on its first day. Trip Chowdhry, who follows Facebook for Global Equities Research, said the "lackluster" opening was because Facebook failed to answer questions about how it will increase revenues and adapt to the mobile Internet. "Management cannot sing and dance around the key issues," he said. Lou Kerner of the Social Internet Fund said the market action suggests the IPO was correctly priced. "The company raised a ton of money, lots of early investors, employees, and founders were able to monetize shares, and it's trading up a little, so the new investors did OK," he said. James Hughes, chief market analyst at London's Alpari, said "the real value of Facebook is not likely to be known until the hype of the IPO has died away and investor have been able to digest how the company is going evolve to be the money-making machine many expect it to be." Elsewhere in the tech world, shares of online social game maker Zynga plunged as much as 13.3 percent and triggered a temporary trading halt. The IPO gave Facebook a dizzying value of $104 billion at its market debut. It raised more than $16 billion, making it the richest after that of financial giant Visa in 2008, according to Renaissance Capital. The addition of a possible stock "over-allotment" could boost the total to $18.4 billion. Facebook itself sold 180 million shares and early investors in the company the remaining 241 million. With its current market value, Facebook is now among the most valuable US companies, ahead of sector giants Amazon ($97 billion) and Cisco ($89 billion), and more than twice the value of Ford Motor Co. ($38 billion). But it remains behind Google ($201 billion) and Apple ($498 billion). Under the share plan, Zuckerberg will hold 55.8 percent of the voting power of Facebook shares, and over 18 percent of the value of the company. One of the shadows hanging over Facebook is concerns over privacy. Some consumer and privacy advocates say Facebook has been too loose with user data, and hope that as a publicly traded company, it may change its tune. Zuckerberg has repeatedly apologized for privacy lapses amid outrage from users over revelations their online activities were visible to a wide audience of advertisers and other users. The IPO's net proceeds to Facebook were some $6.8 billion. The rest of the cash goes to Facebook insiders and others who made early investments in the social network, and to cover the IPO costs. At the heart of the debate about the wisdom of owning a piece of Facebook is how much revenue it takes in. Revenue vaulted to $1.06 billion in the quarter which ended March 31 -- an improvement year-over-year but down about six percent from the previous quarter.

'You have to say sorry, but I don't say sorry'

Plenty of sports stars have had days to forget this week - but who's refusing to take the blame?

CHAMPIONS!

"We had the best and worst five minutes in our lives... To win it like this is incredible. I don't think I've ever seen a finale like this." - Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini on the extraordinary end to the Premier League season which saw City crowned champions.

"You want to say it's the best moment of your life but, if I'm honest, please never again this way."City captain Vincent Kompany admits that winning the title with two goals in injury time took years off his life.

"I congratulate City on winning the league. Anybody who wins it deserves it." - Alex Fergusonstarts off trying to be magnanimous in defeat...

"I think we have a rich history, better than anyone and it will take them a century to get to our level of history." ...but then Fergie thinks, nah, what the hell, and has a dig at the noisy neighbours after all.

BANNER BANTER

"RIP Fergie" - Banner held up by Carlos Tevezduring City's victory celebrations on Monday.

"The creation of the tasteless material is in itself reprehensible. In accepting and brandishing it, Carlos has made a significant error of judgement. The club wishes to express its sincerest apologies to Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United. " - A City spokesmanapologises within hours.

"I got carried away in the excitement of the moment and I certainly didn't mean any disrespect to Sir Alex Ferguson, who I admire as a man and a manager." - Tevez issues his own statement adding to the apology.

"I think it was rather silly, frankly, in terms of what it said, but City acted with commendable speed. We move on and concentrate on other issues." - Manchester United chief executive David Gillaccepts the apology, and lays the matter to rest. At least until Wednesday...

"It seems like Ferguson is the president of England. Every time he speaks badly about a player or says terrible things about me, nobody says that he has to apologise. (But) when someone comes out with a joke or banter (aimed at him), you have to say sorry - but I don't say sorry." - Tevez tells Argentine newspaper Olé that he isn't sorry after all. We have yet to confirm reports that the City striker then blew a raspberry and shouted "nerr nerr ne-nerr nerr!" before running off giggling.

THE KING IS DEAD

"I expect the owners to have more dignity and integrity than to believe a story in a newspaper." -Kenny Dalglish laughs off suggestions in Sunday's papers that he was to be sacked after the end of the season.

"After a careful and deliberative review of the season, the club came to the decision that a change was appropriate." - Liverpool's official statement sacking Dalglish three days later.

"Kenny will always be more than a championship-winning manager, more than a championship-winning star player. He is in many ways the heart and soul of the club. He personifies everything that is good about Liverpool Football Club." - what owner John W Henry had to say about Kenny Dalglish immediately after firing him.

"I spoke to him just before he was getting on his flight and asked: 'Is it Kenny now or gaffer?' He said 'it is Kenny now'... I am sorry to see him go, but that is football. It is a sad day for him, but we respect the owners' decision and we have to look forward now. I will be fully committed to whoever the manager is." - a Jamie Carragher anecdote reveals the depth of feeling towards King Kenny at the club.

ROY IN THE THREE LIONS DEN

"Are we ever going to get off Rio Ferdinand? There are 23 men in the squad, we're preparing for the future and we seem to be discussing one man until the cows come home." - England boss Roy Hodgson, halfway through his very first squad announcement as manager of the national team, andalready getting sick and tired of the journalists who will blight his life for the next four years.

"To say I'm gutted is an understatement of the highest order." - Rio Ferdinand on being axed by Roy Hodgson.

"Just had afternoon nap & dreamt that Liverpool sacked King Kenny & Rio will not never play in a Euros... Oh no, I'm now actually awake! #madness" - England women's football captain Faye Whitesums up a Wednesday afternoon full of surprises.

"I think it's a bit dangerous to cancel weddings at the last moment. This is a football match, it's not the end of the world." - Hodgson explains that he will let Norwich's John Ruddy get married despite his big day clashing with one of England's pre-Euro 2012 friendlies.

BEST OF THE REST

"A lot of people would think a mankini might look better than the uniform they've nominated for us, so I don't know if it's such a bad thing." - Australian shooting gold medallist Russell Mark, who will wear a Borat-style 'mankini' at the opening ceremony of London 2012 after losing a bet he made while drunk.

"Russell is no spring chicken, his days of being a model are long gone... (and) as we all know the London weather is fickle and we would not want him to catch cold." - an Australian Olympic Committee spokesman desperately tries to persuade the hefty 48-year-old not to do it.

"He got spat at, kicked and punched. He's fine, but you get worse than that. I've been brought up in Liverpool!" - MK Dons boss Karl Robinson plays down the attack on Alan Smith by Huddersfield fans after the League One play-off semi-final.

"There are a couple of players we're looking at in that tournament and, as far as I'm concerned, I hope they have an awful one!" - Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is hoping that Euro 2012 doesn't put his summer targets out of his price bracket.

"Yeah, he was to some extent. I'm not denying that. But if we thought he'd been a w**ker, he wouldn't have got in the team no matter how much money he had." - Frank Williams in hilariously honest mood as he admits that Spanish Grand Prix winner Pastor Maldonado only got a drive with the team because of the sponsorship cash he brought with him.

"We have a young up-and-comer on the team, a guy named David Beckham. I gave David a hard time. I said half his team-mates could be his kids. We're getting old, David, though you're holding up better than me." - US president Barack Obama cracks a joke at David Beckham's expense as LA Galaxy were welcomed to the White House in recognition of their MLS title. For the record, Beckham is 37 and Obama is 50.

"He is tough. It is rare a man can be that tough on the field and also have his own line of underwear." -Obama again, still teasing Beckham.

"For 25 years I was alone, abandoned and persecuted. I was considered guilty without even being tried by judges. I have been treated like a criminal and my human dignity and sporting image has been violated." - Diego Maradona explaining why he is suing the Italian government for £40 million.

23 killed in day of drug wars horror for Mexico

The northern Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo saw a brutal day of gang violence, with 14 headless bodies found stuffed in a vehicle and nine bodies found hanging from a bridge. The gruesome crimes came less than two months before Mexico's presidential election, and just ahead of a key weekend debate between the leading candidates, during which security policy is likely to be a key issue. Horrified motorists in Nuevo Laredo -- across the river border from Laredo, Texas -- came upon the blood-stained bodies of four women and five men hanging off a bridge, along with an apparent message from a drug gang. Police then discovered the 14 headless bodies in a vehicle parked in front of the Association of Customs Agents on one of the city's main avenues. The 14 heads were found in ice boxes outside the city hall. The grim spectacles were extreme even for Nuevo Laredo, a city of nearly 400,000 in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, which has seen some of the most gruesome episodes in Mexico's brutal five-and-a-half year drug war. State security forces and soldiers cordoned off the areas where the bodies were found and made no immediate comment. Nuevo Laredo is regularly the scene of vicious disputes between the Zetas drug gang -- set up in the 1990s by Mexican ex-elite soldiers -- and their former employers, the Gulf cartel, now believed to be allied to the Sinaloa cartel of billionaire fugitive Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. The city is a key site for smuggling illegal narcotics into the United States: around 40 percent of the land cargo heading north, much of it from the industrial city of Monterrey, funnels through Nuevo Laredo. Last month, the dismembered remains of 14 men were found inside a van left near Nuevo Laredo city hall. Days later a car exploded outside police headquarters. More than 50,000 people have been killed in Mexico's war on drugs since December 2006, when outgoing President Felipe Calderon launched a nationwide military crackdown on organized crime. Most of the deaths have been from turf battles between rival gangs. In the northwestern state of Sinaloa, 34 people were killed over the past seven days in clashes between soldiers and drug gangs. In neighboring Veracruz state, further south on the Gulf of Mexico, security forces Thursday found the dismembered bodies of two missing news photographers and two others, just days after a magazine reporter was killed in the same state. The photographers, Gabriel Huge and his nephew Guillermo Luna, were buried in Veracruz city on Friday. As in Tamaulipas, many crime reporters have fled Veracruz in recent months amid threats and drug gang battles. Hundreds of journalists demonstrated in cities across Mexico on Friday, calling for better protection for reporters and denouncing the failure to punish those responsible for similar murders.
"Not One More," read placards carried by protesters in Mexico City. The four leading candidates vying to succeed Calderon will square off in a debate on Sunday, ahead of the July 1 election.  Even though security is the top concern among voters, the candidates have not addressed the issue unless directly asked, said Vicente Sanchez, a professor at the School of the Northern Border. "They have given an occasional outline, but have not gone deep into what they would do or how they would do it," he said. The recent wave of violence could force them to "present a more clear position and face the issue in a more open way," Sanchez said.

British Red Cross doctor kidnapped in Pakistan found beheaded

Khalil Rasjed Dale, 60, was abducted by suspected militants on January 5 while on his way home from work.

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - The beheaded body of a kidnapped British doctor working for the International Committee of the Red Cross was found by the roadside on Sunday in the southwestern Pakistan city of Quetta, police and Red Cross officials said.

"The ICRC condemns in the strongest possible terms this barbaric act," ICRC Director-General Yves Daccord said in a statement. "All of us at the ICRC and at the British Red Cross share the grief and outrage of Khalil's family and friends."

His name was written on the white plastic bag with black marker.

Police discovered Dale wrapped in plastic near a western bypass road in the capital of southwestern Baluchistan province where Baluch separatist militants are fighting a protracted insurgency for more autonomy.

"A sharp knife was used to sever his head from the body," said Safdar Hussain, the first doctor to examine the body. "He was killed about 12 hours ago."

Dale had worked for the ICRC and the British Red Cross in Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq before coming to Pakistan. He had been managing a health programme for Baluchistan for almost a year when he was abducted, the ICRC statement said.

"We are devastated," Daccord said. "Khalil was a trusted and very experienced Red Cross staff member who significantly contributed to the humanitarian cause."

British Foreign Secretary William Hague condemned the killing.

"This was a senseless and cruel act, targeting someone whose role was to help the people of Pakistan, and causing immeasurable pain to those who knew Mr Dale," Hague said in the statement.

The Pakistani foreign office promised to hold the killers accountable.

"The Government of Pakistan condemns this barbaric act in the strongest terms and is determined to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice," a statement from the Foreign Office said.

"Pakistan is committed to combat terrorism and the death of Mr. Dale has only strengthened our resolve to eliminate this scourge."

Dale is the third Westerner killed in such a fashion in Pakistan. The others include Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002 and Piotr Stanczak, a Polish geologist, in 2009.

A senior police officer said the Pakistan Taliban had claimed responsibility for the killing, saying a ransom had not been paid.

The Pakistan Taliban have been fighting a bloody insurgency against the Pakistani state since its formation in 2007. It is close to al Qaeda and it claimed credit for a failed car bomb attempt in New York's Times Square in May 2010.

Pro-Taliban militants are also active in Baluchistan, which shares borders with Afghanistan and Iran.

In March, a Swiss couple that had been abducted in Baluchistan showed up at an army checkpoint after eight months of captivity. Militants said a ransom had been paid, but this wad never confirmed.

Four health workers, including two doctors, were kidnapped by militants the week before Dale's disappearance from the Pishin area of Baluchistan, near Quetta. They were freed after a shootout between police and their kidnappers.

And in August 2011, American aid worker Warren Weinstein was kidnapped from his home in Lahore. Al Qaeda later claimed responsibility for the abduction.

Sunday Times Rich List 2012: Wealth of richest grows to record levels

By Patrick Sawer | Telegraph –  Sat, Apr 28, 2012

The combined wealth of the 1,000 richest men and women in Britain has risen to record levels in the past year, despite the country’s continuing economic slump.

That exceeds the previous record of £412.8 billion set in 2008, which came just a few months before the financial crash from which the wider British economy has yet to recover.

Heading the list for the seventh year running is the steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, although his wealth has fallen £4,814m to £12,700m, placing him just £385m ahead of Alisher Usmanov, whose Metalloinvest is Russia’s biggest iron ore producer.

Their total fortune has risen by just under five per cent since 2011, to £414 billion, according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List.

Usmanov’s fortune has also fallen, in his case by £85m in the past year, in part because of charitable donations of £91m.

Third placed Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea FC has seen his wealth fall by £800m to £9,500m.

But if the top three richest men in Britain have seen their fortunes slide, huge earnings elsewhere have fuelled this year’s record total wealth.

Efforts by hard-pressed families to make their wages go further during the economic downturn have boosted the fortunes of the owners of cut-price retail outlets.

Liverpool-based Tom Morris and family, who own the Home Bargains stores, have seen their fortune leap from £160m to £620m. The B&M Retail discount chain, also based in the north west, has contributed to a £144m increase in the wealth of its owners, Simon, Robin and Bobby Arora, taking them to £487m and a place in the top 200.

Some of the biggest gains have been made by those who do not fall in the billionaire bracket, or even those with fortunes of over £750m.

The wealth of individuals with between £330m and £750m has gone up 7.8 per cent this year, with those worth £328m to £151m seeing their fortunes grow by 9 per cent. That compares to a rise of just 2.5 per cent in the wealth of the richest 100.

There has been a sharp rise in the wealth of British-born entrepreneurs, with Laurence Graff, the diamond retailer, seeing his fortune go up £1,300m to £3,300m.

The performance of the earth-moving machinery firm JCB saw the fortune of its owner Sir Anthony Bamford and family go up by £1,500m to £3,150m, while Sir James Dyson, the inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner, saw his fortune increase by £1,200m to £2,650m.

Topping the list of who, among Britain’s richest individuals, are also the most generous philanthropists is the artist David Hockney. He has given away more than twice his residual wealth of £34m by donating works valued at £76.5m, as well as £730,000 in cash, through the David Hockney Foundation.

Overall, donations or pledges from the top 100 philanthropists increased by £220m to £1.89 billion. That saw the amount of residual wealth donated by the top 100 richest people pass the milestone of at least one per cent for the first time in The Sunday Times Rich List’s 11-year history.

There have been notable changes in the fortunes of Britain’s richest artists, entertainers and celebrities.

Sir Paul McCartney, whose marriage to Nancy Shevell, the millionaire daughter of a US trucking magnate, has seen his estimated worth rocket from £495 to £665 million, making him the third-wealthiest man in British music. Ranked above him are Clive Calder, the music executive with a £1,350m fortune and Sir Cameron Mackintosh, whose wealth has grown by seven per cent to £725m.

JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, has seen her wealth grow by £30m to £560m, placing her 148th on the list.

Daniel Ek, the London-based owner of the music download site Spotify, makes his first appearance on the Rich List at 395, equalling the £190 million valuation of David and Victoria Beckham, who themselves added £25 million to their combined worth.

Underworld figure gunned down in Sydney

An underworld figure has been shot dead in a suburban street as a feud over a relatively minor debt erupted into Sydney's latest case of violent gun crime.

The victim, a Bankstown man aged in his late 30s, was shot with a pistol several times at close range as he got out of his car in Riverwood, in the city's southwest, on Saturday night.

Superintendent Stephen Blackmore said the deceased was well-known to detectives attached to Operation Spartan, set up in January to investigate Sydney's recent surge in gun crime.

"The victim has previously been involved in public place shootings," he told reporters on Sunday.

Supt Blackmore said the shooting was over a personal debt.

A police source told AAP the amount of money involved was relatively minor.

"We're talking about relatively small sums of money here, not millions of dollars by any stretch," the source said.

Supt Blackmore would not elaborate on the nature of the debt, including speculation it may have involved drugs.

But he said it was not a family row and not bikie gang-related.

A man was arrested at the scene of the shooting, at the intersection of Bell and Schofield streets.

The 34-year-old, from Riverwood, was being questioned by detectives on Sunday.

The state opposition said Saturday night's shooting was the 21st in April.

"Families are being forced to live in fear of the shooting sprees playing out on Sydney streets," Opposition Leader John Robertson said in a statement.

"This morning innocent families have woken to the news a man has been shot dead in their neighbourhood."

The opposition has accused the state government of failing to take action over the shootings.

Bee Gees star Robin Gibb wakes from coma

ABC April 22, 2012

Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb has woken from a coma and responded to members of his family, his spokesman said Saturday.

Gibb, 62, contracted pneumonia and fell into the coma last week. He is suffering from colon and liver cancer.

His spokesman Doug Wright said the singer had been able to nod and communicate with family members, who have been at his bedside at a hospital in west London.

He did not give further details.

The British star's wife Dwina said last week that the singer's brother, fellow Bee Gee Barry Gibb, had been singing to Robin to try to rouse him.

His three children had also been playing music to him, she said.

The Bee Gees - twins Robin and the late Maurice Gibb and their elder brother Barry, 65 - are among the biggest-selling groups of all time.

Robin Gibb had bowel surgery 18 months ago but a tumour was found and he was diagnosed with cancer of the colon and the liver

In February, he said he had made a "spectacular" recovery from his treatment, sparking hopes that his cancer was in remission.

But Gibb was too ill to attend last week's premiere of his first classical work, The Titanic Requiem, composed with his son Robin-John to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking.

He had been due to perform the song Don't Cry Alone at the central London premiere.

Serie A - Serie B star dies after cardiac arrest on pitch
Sat, 14 Apr 18  2012 Livorno's Piermario Morosini has died after suffering a cardiac arrest during an Serie B game at Pescara on Saturday, prompting the Italian football federation to postpone this weekend's professional games.  "We have done everything possible to save him but he never regained consciousness," doctor Leonardo Paloscia said. Another doctor at the Pescara hospital said the 25-year-old, a former Italy under-21 international who was at Udinese until January, was dead on arrival at hospital. The news comes just weeks after Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba suffered a similar problem in an FA Cup match before making a remarkable recovery. BSerie A said in a statement that the federation had postponed all the weekend's professional matches. Morosini, born in Bergamo and a former player with the city's Atalanta team, fell to the ground with no one around him in the 31st minute.
He got up looking confused and then collapsed again as medics and then an ambulance rushed on to the field.
The Serie B game was abandoned with Livorno leading 2-0 and Morosini, who was orphaned as a teenager and also lost a brother, was taken to a Pescara hospital where he was pronounced dead. Defending Serie A champions Milan were due to host Genoa in Serie A that afternoon. At first Milan said there would be a minute's silence but then the public announcer told fans already in the stadium that the game would be postponed along with all other remaining Serie A matches this weekend. There was applause but also some whistles. The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), which confirmed Morosini had suffered a cardiac arrest, announced in a statement that all other sporting events taking place this weekend would hold a minute's silence. The issue of players' health has long been in focus across the game with extra medical and heart checks being brought in throughout many leagues. Marc-Vivien Foe collapsed during Cameroon's 1-0 victory against Colombia in a Confederations Cup match in June 2003 in Lyon, France and died shortly afterwards aged 26. The shock over that high-profile death, one of at least 20 in the last 20 years in professional leagues, led to changes but some believe more needs to be done. In the wake of Bolton's Muamba suffering a cardiac arrest while playing at Tottenham Hotspur in an FA Cup quarter-final on March 17, Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini - an Italian - said English medicals were not as good as in his homeland. Muamba too fell to the ground with no one near him and doctors later said he had been "in effect dead" for 78 minutes while his heart did not beat on its own. He was revived and has gone on to make extraordinary progress in hospital. He is now walking and recently tweeted a photograph of himself sitting up in bed and smiling. The Italian medical system hailed by Mancini did not help Morosini, however. Tearful Livorno players travelled to the hospital to pray alongside his body. Italy is used to sporting tragedy in recent years.Last October, popular MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli died after a crash at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Franco Ballerini, the coach of Italy's cycling team, also died in a rallying accident in 2010.

8.2 AFTERSHOCK SPARKS FRESH TSUNAMI ALERT\ AAP April 11, 2012

A fresh tsunami warning has been issued after a strong 8.2-magnitude aftershock rattled the same area off the coast of Indonesia. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the aftershock struck at 2043 AEST 615 kilometres from Banda Aceh. This follows expert advice that the first tremor had been horizontal, rather than vertical, and that a tsunami was unlikely.
Southeast Asian nations had earlier issued tsunami alerts and urged people to move to safety away from coastlines after a massive 8.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra on Wednesday. Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and Malaysia issued evacuation instructions as US monitors issued an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami watch after the
quake, which according to the USGS struck off the coast of Sumatra at 2.38pm (1838 AEST) at a depth of 22 kilometres.
USGS had initially reported it as an 8.9-magnitude quake. German experts who helped install the tsunami warning system off
Indonesia said Wednesday's quake was horizontal, rather than vertical, making a big tsunami less likely.
"There wasn't much vertical movement," said Rainer Kind, of the German Geo-Research Centre (GFZ), which helped to install the system after a 2004 tsunami killed hundreds of thousands of people in the same area. Based on data from the system, "it's very likely that it generated a tsunami," Kind told DPA from the GFZ headquarters at Potsdam near Berlin.
But the size of the wave was "very difficult to predict, because we don't know the topography of the seabed", he said. Larger tsunamis are usually created by quakes with vertical movement, or by landslides into the sea. An analyst at Indonesia's Geophysics and Meteorology agency said five of the nation's provinces - Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu and Lampung - were at potential risk. Sri Lanka and India issued tsunami warnings while Thailand urged people on the Andaman coast, a popular tourist destination, to move to safety. Malaysia ordered a coastal evacuation.  A Sri Lanka government statement said potential waves could hit the island's eastern coast by about 2040 AEST and urged an orderly evacuation of the coastal strip. "There is a strong possibility of a tsunami hitting the island after the earthquake in Indonesia," meteorological department deputy director M. D. Dayananda said. He said the quake in Indonesia was felt in Sri Lanka, which is 1340 kilometres northwest of the quake epicentre. India issued a tsunami warning for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands,\ located in the Indian Ocean. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Service issued a red high-level warning for the islands, and also put out lower alerts for the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states in the southeast of the country. Thailand's National Disaster Warning Centre advised people in the area
to move to higher places and stay as far away as possible from the sea. The quake swayed buildings in the capital Bangkok. Australian Bonnie Muddle, vacationing on the Thai resort island of Phuket at the time of the quake, said people were being evacuated from popular tourist areas including Krabi and Phang Nga Bay. "Everyone is getting a little concerned over here," she told AFP. On Wednesday Japan's Meteorological Agency said that there was no risk
of a tsunami affecting Japanese coasts. Geoscience Australia, Canberra's geohazards agency, said there was no
risk to Australia from the jolt. Taiwan and New Zealand also said the earthquake posed no threat to them.

George Osborne Chancellor of the United Kingdon:

I'm going after the wealthy tax dodgers
The Chancellor personally studied the “anonymised” copies of the tax returns submitted by some of the country’s wealthiest citizens which showed some people are able to avoid paying income tax entirely.
George Osborne was left 'shocked' after an analysis of the tax returns of multi-millionaires which he personally ordered found that they are exploiting loopholes to pay little or nothing at all. A confidential study by HM Revenue and customs found they are using aggressive avoidance schemes to reduce their income tax rate to an average of 10 per cent - less than half the level paid by the average Briton. The Chancellor personally studied the “anonymised” copies of the tax returns submitted by some of the country’s wealthiest citizens which showed some people are able to avoid paying income tax entirely. bThe analysis convinced Mr Osborne that millionaires must pay a minimum rate of tax equivalent to about a third of their earnings, which has been described as a “tycoon tax”.

[Related feature: How to legally pay less tax]

Mr Osborne told The Daily Telegraph: “I was shocked to see that some of the very wealthiest people in the country have organised their tax affairs, and to be fair it’s within the tax laws, so that they were regularly paying virtually no income tax. And I don’t think that’s right. “I’m talking about people right at the top. I’m talking about people with incomes of many millions of pounds a year. The general principle is that people should pay income tax and that includes people with the highest incomes. “I’m not allowed to be shown the names of the individuals but I’ve sat with the most senior people at the Inland Revenue, the people who run some of the high net worth units there. They have given me examples, anonymised examples, and so we are taking action.” The report found that Britain’s 20 biggest tax avoiders have used three main loopholes to legally reduce their their income tax bills by a total of £145 million in a year. Two thirds of them wrote off business losses in one of their companies against their income tax bill, reducing it by as much as half . Several of them offset the cost of business mortgages or borrowing on buy-to-let properties against their income tax bill, while others took advantage of relief on donations to charity.

[Related link: Free guides to saving money on tax]

Mr Osborne is now determined that millionaires will have to pay tax of more than a third of their earnings.

From next year, the total amount of tax relief that any individual can claim will be limited to 25 percent of their income or £50,000 whichever is greater. owever, the proposal has sparked controversy as it will lead to restrictions on philanthropic giving which charities have claimed will cause major donations to stop. Mr Osborne insists that he wants to protect and encourage philanthropy, but Treasury sources say the system is open to abuse as people are giving money to foreign charities which they have often established themselves. The Chancellor said: “I was very clear in the budget that we are specifically looking at making sure we are still encouraging philanthropy and charitable giving. But that is a specific issue we can deal with.” The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats agreed to cut the top rate of income tax from 50 percent to 45 percent next year after Mr Osborne agreed to the crackdown on tax avoidance. Mr Osborne said: “I thought the 50p rate was a classic example of spin over substance. You produce a press release which says Britain has a 50p tax rate while you preside over a tax system where some people are paying zero percent tax. “I’ve come up with a budget that has reduced the 50p rate to 45p, so we don’t have the highest income tax rate in the world. But I’ve also asked people who are currently paying zero to pay income tax.” The disclosure that Mr Osborne is now studying individual’s tax returns if likely to add to the pressure on ministers to publish details of their own financial affairs.

The Chancellor told this newspaper that he was “very happy” to consider publishing his tax return but the proposal has sparked a Cabinet backlash.

Phone Hacking: Brooks And Husband Bailed

Former News Of The World editor Rebekah Brooks and her racehorse trainer husband Charlie have been released on bail following their arrests over phone hacking.

Six suspects arrested over allegations of cover-ups in the phone-hacking inquiry - understood to includeRebekah Brooks and her racehorse trainer husband - have been released on bail, Scotland Yard said.
The News International former chief executive and Charlie Brooks - who has been a friend of the Prime Minister since school - were held earlier on Tuesday on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, sources said.
Mark Hanna, News International's head of security, was also confirmed by the company as one of the six people arrested in raids in Oxfordshire, London, Hampshire and Hertfordshire.
A spokesman for Scotland Yard said they were bailed to dates next month.
The dawn raid on the Brooks' home is potentially embarrassing for David Cameron, who was forced to make further admissions earlier this month about the extent of his relationship with the couple.
After it emerged that Scotland Yard lent an ex-police horse, Raisa, to Mrs Brooks, the Prime Minister conceded it had been among his mounts on rides with Mr Brooks - a friend from their Eton schooldays.
Officers from Operation Weeting - the inquiry into voicemail interceptions - said they consulted the Crown Prosecution Service before carrying out their busiest morning of arrests since the operation was launched last year.
Mrs Brooks, 43, was questioned at an Oxfordshire police station while Mr Brooks was interviewed at a Buckinghamshire police station.
The force said searches were going on at several addresses after a 39-year-old man was arrested in Hampshire, a 46-year-old man was held in west London, a 38-year-old man was arrested in Hertfordshire and a 48-year-old man was detained at a business address in east London, and were also interviewed at separate police stations. The 38-year-old man was also later released from a central London police station.
The arrests, which are not understood to result from information passed to them by News Corporation's management and standards committee, come just days after Mrs Brooks's lawyer Stephen Parkinson said evidence given by Metropolitan Police deputy assistant commissioner Sue Akers at the Leveson Inquiry brought "much prejudicial material" into the public domain.

Phone Hacking: Brooks And Husband Bailed

Sky News –

Former News Of The World editor Rebekah Brooks and her racehorse trainer husband Charlie have been released on bail following their arrests over phone hacking.

Five of the six people detained on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice were released this evening, Scotland Yard said.
They were bailed to return to a police station on a date in April. A 38-year-old man remains in custody.
The co-ordinated arrests were made by officers from Operation Weeting, the Metropolitan Police investigation into illegal hacking of voicemail messages.
Brooks and her husband were at home in Oxfordshire when they had a very early call from the police, Sky News crime correspondent Martin Brunt said.
Scotland Yard said the four other men - aged 39, 46, 38 and 48 - were arrested at properties in Hampshire, London and Hertfordshire.
One of the men is head of security at News International, Mark Hanna, the company confirmed.
A number of addresses connected to the arrests are being searched, police added.
Sky sources also said Rebekah Brooks is the only one among the six that has been re-arrested in connection with the phone-hacking inquiry.
The former newspaper editor and ex-News International chief executive was arrested and bailed last summer on suspicion of phone hacking and corruption.
Her lawyer has said she denies committing any criminal offence.
Brooks was the editor of the News Of The World (NOTW) and The Sun before becoming chief executive of News International in 2009.
A public furore erupted last July after it was revealed that a private detective working for the NOTW hacked the mobile phone of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.
Brooks resigned as News International chief executive last year.
Charlie Brooks, who writes for The Daily Telegraph, is an old friend of David Cameron - they were at Eton together and maintain a close friendship.
The Prime Minister was recently forced to reveal he rode a former police horse that had been loaned to the couple.
A total of 22 people have now been arrested under Operation Weeting, which has been running since January last year.
:: The phone-hacking scandal prompted the creation of the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics.

Police Loaned Retired Horse To Rebekah Brooks

The News Of The World's former editor, Rebekah Brooks, was loaned a police horse by Scotland Yard, it has emerged.
The retired horse was fostered by the ex-News International chief executive in 2008.
The 43-year-old is said to be a keen rider and her husband is former racehorse trainer Charlie Brooks.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police (MPS) said: "Retired police horses are not sold on and can be returned to the care of the MPS at any time.
"In 2008, a retired MPS horse was loaned to Rebekah Brooks.
"The horse was subsequently re-housed with a police officer in 2010."
The animal cared for by Mrs Brooks was one of 12 retired by the force in 2008.
A further 29 had their duties ended between 2009 and 2011.
Many are retired with The Horse Trust charity in Buckinghamshire.
But the revelation is sure to once again raise questions about the relationship between the police and the press.
Mrs Brooks, 43, remains on bail after being questioned by detectives last summer on suspicion of phone hacking and corruption.
Her lawyer has said she denies committing any criminal offence.

Rebekah Brooks and her racehorse trainer husband are among six suspects arrested by detectives investigating phone hacking at News International.
The former News International chief executive and Charlie Brooks were arrested at their Oxfordshire home on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, sources said.
Police are searching several addresses after dawn raids also took place in London, Hampshire and Hertfordshire, Scotland Yard said.
Ms Brooks, a former editor of The Sun, had been on bail after being questioned by detectives last summer on suspicion of phone hacking and corruption.
The arrest come after her lawyer, Stephen Parkinson, said evidence given by Sue Akers at the Leveson Inquiry had brought "much prejudicial material" into the public domain.

Ex-Murdoch aide Brooks, husband arrested in hacking probe

By Alice Ritchie | AFP

British police investigating phone hacking re-arrested former Rupert Murdoch aide Rebekah Brooks on Tuesday and detained her husband, a close friend of Prime Minister David Cameron, reports said.
Brooks and her husband Charlie were reportedly among six people arrested at dawn on suspicion of perverting the course of justice by officers probing the scandal at Murdoch's now-closed tabloid, the News of the World.
All six were released on bail later Tuesday, Scotland Yard announced.
"The co-ordinated arrests were made between approximately 5am (0500 GMT) and 7am this morning," London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
Brooks resigned as chief executive of Murdoch's British newspaper unit, News International, in July, ending a stellar career which saw her edit both the News of the World and its daily sister paper The Sun.
She (SNP: ^SHEY - news) quit just three days before being arrested for the first time on suspicion of the illegal hacking of mobile phone voicemails and bribing public officials. She has always denied any wrongdoing.
News International confirmed to AFP that two current "non-editorial" staff had been arrested, identifying one of them as its head of security, Mark Hanna, but declining to name the other.
The company and Brooks's spokesman David Wilson were both unable to confirm reports in the British media that Rebekah and Charlie Brooks were among those arrested.
Scotland Yard said they had detained a 43-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man at their home addresses in Oxfordshire, west of London but refused to confirm their identities.
It said the others arrested, also in the south of England, were aged between 38 and 48.
"All six -- five men and one woman -- were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice," it said.
Brooks and her husband, a racehorse trainer, live in a wealthy area of rural Oxfordshire near Cameron, who has described Charlie Brooks as a "good friend" whom he has known since his schooldays at the elite Eton College.
The arrests will likely be embarrassing for the prime minister, who flew to Washington on Tuesday for talks with President Barack Obama.
Cameron's spokeswoman refused to comment, saying: "It's an operational matter for police."
Murdoch shut down the News of the World in July after evidence emerged of widespread phone hacking at the tabloid, but his British newspapers continue to be dogged by allegations they covered up the practice.
Last month, documents emerged suggesting that News of the World executives actively sought from the end of November (Stuttgart: A0Z24E - news) 2009 to delete emails which could be used in legal action against the tabloid.
A total of 22 people have now been arrested in the hacking probe.
A further 23 have been held over the alleged bribery of public officials, including 11 current or former journalists at The Sun.
Nobody has yet been charged in the two police investigations, although the News of the World's royal editor Clive Goodman and a private investigator were jailed in 2007 for phone hacking following a separate police probe.
Cameron has tried to downplay his friendship with Rebekah and Charlie Brooks, but it came under the spotlight this month after it emerged the prime minister had ridden a horse that the couple had borrowed from Scotland Yard.
The loan of the horse was seen as evidence of the cosy ties between police and Murdoch journalists.
"I've known Charlie Brooks, the husband of Rebekah Brooks, for over 30 years. He's a good friend and he's a neighbour in the constituency -- we live a few miles apart," Cameron said on March 2 when asked about the horse.
Cameron has also been drawn into the hacking scandal through Andy Coulson, another former News of the World editor who worked as his media chief until January 2011.
Coulson was arrested on allegations of phone hacking and bribery last year.
Rebekah Brooks has been dubbed Murdoch's "fifth daughter" because of her closeness to the media mogul, for whom she has worked since she joined the News of the World when she was only 20 years old.

James Murdoch gives up News International role

By Yinka Adegoke and Mark Hosenball | Reuters
BSkyB chairman James Murdoch speaks at the BSkyB Annual General Meeting at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in central London

Reuters) - James Murdoch resigned as executive chairman of News International on Wednesday, raising new doubts he can succeed his father Rupert as CEO of parent company News Corp in the wake of a phone hacking scandal at the unit he oversaw.
It also raises the possibility that one of his older siblings -- Elisabeth or Lachlan -- could emerge as an eventual contender for the top job, according to people familiar with the matter.
Other sources suggested a contrarian view of James' departure from News International, interpreting the move to focus him on operations based out of corporate headquarters in New York as Rupert defying his doubters by bringing his embattled son closer to the company's power centre. That would dovetail with another counterintuitive move the elder Murdoch made recently: launching a Sunday edition of his tabloid The Sun newspaper in London last week amidst an investigation that had led to the arrest of several journalists at that paper in addition to those of the now-defunct News of the World.
The younger Murdoch, once seen as heir apparent to his 80-year-old father, has been under pressure since the phone-hacking scandal erupted last summer at the British newspapers. His resignation is the latest in a flurry of senior executive resignations from News International since the scandal came to light.
Thousands of celebrities and everyday citizens had their voice mails hacked by journalists at News International newspapers before James took over but he has been heavily criticized for his handling of the affair afterwards. The company has paid out millions of dollars in settlement fees to date with more expected to come.
"We won't miss him," said a News International insider who asked not to be named. "His contribution to dealing with this whole (hacking) issue has been unimpressive at best as well as his lack of ability to see what was going on himself and to do anything about it."
James will remain deputy chief operating officer of News Corp with a focus on its international TV business, a New York-based post he was promoted to last year.
Analysts said the move was unsurprising in one sense because Rupert Murdoch would be keen to distance his son from the troubles in London.
"It makes sense to get James as far away from News International as possible, if he is to have any hope of re-establishing his position in the company," said Steve Hewlett, a London-based media analyst.
"The more revelations there are about phone hacking and all the rest of it, the sharper the focus on what he knows or didn't know will become. There's no suggestion he is involved in any of it; it's all about what he knew."\
James Murdoch has already made a move to his new job in New York, though his family is still based in London for now. He stepped down as a director of London-based GlaxoSmithkline last year. Analysts pointed out that despite moving to New York he would still need to answer to any charges or UK government inquiries that might arise related to the hacking case.
The move appears to further strengthen the position of News Corp President Chase Carey, who is now favoured by investors to take the top job at the Murdoch family controlled media conglomerate.
"It clarifies the management hierarchy and clarifies Chase Carey as the person who's both No. 2 and No. 3 behind Rupert Murdoch," said Collins Stewart analyst Thomas Eagan. "That's a good thing. I think the operations are going well."
News Corp's shares hit a new 52-week high on Wednesday morning of $20.35. Analysts and investors have remained ambivalent to the phone hacking scandal throughout the last year, noting that newspapers make up only a tiny portion of News Corp's overall business.
News Corp Chairman Rupert Murdoch said in a statement his son would still play a key role at the company.
The elder Murdoch has spent most of the last two weeks in London overseeing The Sun's Sunday launch. The move was seen as an effort to boost staff morale following an ongoing internal investigation into his newspapers' journalistic operations.
"I think it is clearly regrettable that any of this happened but it did and as a shareholder I believe the company has behaved very responsibly to find the people who were responsible," said Larry Haverty, a portfolio manager at Gabelli Multimedia Funds.
MURDOCH FAMILY POWER STRUGGLE
A source familiar with internal company machinations said that even before Rupert Murdoch left for his latest trip to London it was becoming apparent that James Murdoch's prospects to succeed his father at the head of the News Corp empire were fading.
Powerful company insiders close to the internal investigation News Corp set up to clean up the company's UK newspapers have come to question James' record heading the unit, according to the source. They also question his responses to the phone hacking scandal as it unfolded.
As a consequence, Rupert's eldest son, Lachlan, who dropped out of contention as heir apparent as a result of a brutal corporate power struggle that forced him out of the company in 2005, appeared at his father's side in London last week. But James was nowhere in sight even though he nominally remained executive chairman of the British newspaper interests.
Company sources cautioned, however, that Lachlan is content to continue building his own business back in his native Australia and is uninterested in returning to News Corp at the moment. Still, his father has repeatedly tried to entice Lachlan back into the fold with numerous job offers.

Sources said that daughter Elisabeth Murdoch, whose independent London-based television production company, Shine, was acquired by News Corp last year, has been waiting quietly in the wings and is regarded by some as the current favourite to succeed her father, if any family member ultimately is allowed to make that move.

James Murdoch's resignation comes after a new spate of embarrassing revelations in London at the judge-led Leveson Inquiry into press standards, which was ordered by British Prime Minister David Cameron in the wake of the phone hacking scandal.

A police officer heading three criminal inquiries into reporting practices at News International testified on Monday that there was a "culture of illegal payments" to corrupt public officials at the company's flagship Sun newspaper.

The Inquiry also brought to light an email from a top in-house lawyer at News International that showed senior managers had been told as far back as 2006 that illegal phone hacking was not confined to one "rogue reporter," as the company maintained for years afterward, but was likely to have been far more widespread, as later proved to be the case.

Julian Assange Supreme Court Appeal Hearing
Julian Assange
Today the 1st February, 2012, at the Supreme Court in London, UK's highest court, Julian Assange's QC Counsel Dianah Rose,
presented an absolute compelling argument why  Julian Assange must win hisappeal to stop himself from being extradited to Sweden.  CIA operative Marko has confessed to an AWN reporter that these are false charges as a way to force Jullan Assange to Sweden, where authorities in the USA will make sure Julian Assange will be extradited to the USA, and no doubt murdered in a US prison

WikiLeaks aside, Assange case strikes core of civil liberty

Geoffrey Robertson February 3, 2012 Opinion
Europe has blurred the line between enforcement and the judiciary.

JULIAN Assange's current court appearance in Britain has nothing to do with sex or United States diplomatic cables or even with WikiLeaks. But it may make an important contribution to European law.

The United Kingdom Supreme Court will be considering the point I raised on his behalf when a Swedish prosecutor claimed to be a ''judicial authority'' empowered to issue a warrant to have him extradited to prison in Stockholm. My written argument began quite bluntly: ''The notion that a prosecutor is a 'judicial authority' is a contradiction in terms.'' Judges must, as their defining quality, be independent of government. Police and prosecutors employed and promoted by the state obviously cannot be perceived as impartial if they are permitted to decide issues on the liberty of individuals. They are expected to be zealous in working up evidence against a suspect, so they are the last people who can be trusted to weigh up impartially the evidence they themselves have drummed up. That is a matter for a court. So how comes it that in Sweden and many other European countries, prosecutors and even policemen and women are allowed to issue a so-called European arrest warrant, which has the draconian effect of requiring the arrest of people in another country and dragging them for trial in the state which has issued the warrant? The answer partly derives from the lack of principle in the historical development of European criminal law, where for centuries prosecutors and ministers of justice have exercised powers that in the UK and Australia would need judicial approval. That Napoleonic figure, the ''investigating magistrate'' - a judicial official who conducts a pretrial investigation - has helped to muddy the distinction between law enforcement agencies and judges.

So when the major European countries got together 12 years ago to devise a fast-track extradition process, and decided that European arrest warrants requiring the arrest and surrender of individuals could be issued by ''judicial authorities'', there was some confusion about what that term meant, and whether police and prosecutors might qualify. Sweden and some other countries thought they did. It will be inconvenient if Assange's appeal succeeds, because European countries will have to change their laws. But the argument from inconvenience is the classic way for civil liberties to be lost. The principle of judicial independence is especially important in the Assange case, where an allegation of what Swedes describe as ''minor rape'' (another contradiction in terms) was dismissed by a very experienced Stockholm prosecutor. It was later revived (in an unfair process from which Assange was excluded) by another prosecutor with a gender agenda who was given to issuing self-promoting press statements and withholding exculpatory evidence. She was, therefore, an inappropriate person to take what should have been an impartial decision about whether a European arrest warrant should be issued against her quarry. So the point is important, as the UK's Supreme Court said in December when granting leave to appeal. Its decision can be expected in April or May this year. A ruling in Assange's favour would not prevent Sweden from extraditing him eventually, but it would have to change its procedures and have his European arrest warrant issued by a court. Other countries - France and Germany among them - would have to change their practice of having police and prosecutors issuing European arrest warrants as well, if they want to get their hands on suspects in the UK. The case comes at an interesting time in Britain, where there is a debate over whether the country's acceptance of the European Convention on Human Rights should be supplemented or replaced with a British Bill of Rights which would strengthen traditional liberties. You cannot get anything more traditional than the liberty that flows from the independence of the judiciary. The notion that anyone in the UK can be arrested, deported, denied bail and then tried in secret (the procedure for dealing with sex crime charges in Sweden), all on the say-so of an obviously prejudiced foreign prosecutor, could strike many as oppressive.

Former UN appeal judge Geoffrey Robertson, QC, advises Julian Assange and is the author of Crimes Against Humanity and The Justice Game.

As a male, I am disgusted that female hate can and does victimise men with the slur of "sexual assault."
Why isn't the cold light of day being focused on the female prosecutor attacking Assange?
Why is this prosecutor still supported by her country?
The American background influence, to get Assange ultimately to the USA for "prosecution" is an affront to all of our freedoms.
USA = good guys? HA!
Meanwhile, Gillard, this self-interested political organism, does nothing in support of an Australian citizen.
Seriously, the worst of humanity is in charge of humanity.

  • Great article highlighting what the legal debate is actually about --- and the risk in letting the protection of our freedoms slip. John Pilinger's article on this is also good: http://johnpilger.com/articles/the-assange-case-means-we-are-all-suspects-now

As America shuts down bank funds to Wikileaks without trial, drone-kills its own citizen, allows indefinite detention (new "NDAA" law), trial Manning without media access, demands our data from Twitter etc, and some in Congress pushe for China-like control of the internet (SOPA) - responsible journalists and citizens really need to push back against these new abuses of power.

    • Great article highlighting what the legal debate is actually about......
I'm far from being a lawyer or a politician, there is one thing if true democracy was respected by the selective elite we wouldn't all the problems we have.

If democracy means "Government of the people, by the people, for the people" than why the people are irrelevant?

  • Excellent article Geoffrey. It does seem a no-brainer but we live in strange times. Obama just passed into law the ability for the US security services to drag out of their homes in the middle of the night, citizens and aliens, to be locked up, rendited, tortured and held without trial. No doubt in response to the OWS movement, this law also allows the regular military (as opposed to the National Guard) onto the streets for the first time ever. And here in Australia of course we destroyed a thousand years of habeus corpus ourselves under John Howard with Labor obsequient acquiescence. Napoleon couldn't do it, Hitler couldn't do it, but plow an aircraft into a skyscraper a continent away and of course the natural response is to destroy a thousand years of justice.

    • Yeah I think you're a little confused on that first point worrierqueen. The president of the US doesn't have the ability to pass laws, only to veto them. Although vetos have been abused in the past, the president should, in theory, *only* veto a law if it degrades national security, of which this doesn't. Sure this law is ugly, but it was passed in a democratic way, however you want to dice it.

Ironically, the mere act of democracy appears to be an inconvenient truth to many democrats. People from both sides of politics regularly espouse their views as if they're some universal truth, like they're talking on behalf of humanity. Sometimes, being part of a democracy means you have to concede that you're not in the majority on many issues and decisions will be made that you're not happy with.

  • Hopefully the British judiciary will uphold the rights of the individual and send a strong message to those who wish to challenge it.

The same fundamental rights that the elected leaders and public servants of the western world seem to have forgotten, even after solemnly swearing to serve their people above all others [not just vested interests and corporations].

Fingers crossed for a sign that the concept of right and wrong still exists, in the halls of power, somewhere on the planet.

  • An interesting article which poses a number of valid questions.
More importantly to me is that fact that the Australian Government has turned its back on an Australian citizen who is being "railroaded". Consider this in the light of the article's view about who can issue an arrest warrant and whether or not there is judicial independence?

    • What can the Australian government do?
What should the Australian government do?

The Australian government is providing consular assistance as is the case with any Australian arrest overseas. Contrary to the views of many self-appointed lawyers, Australia does not wield some kind of supreme international authority and Australia has no business interfering in other countries judiciary processes. The Australian government only has a mandate to provide *consular assistance* (ie. not even legal assistance) within the confines of the law of the country.

Just because Assange is high-profile doesn't mean the government should spend any more time or effort on assisting him than they would any other Australian overseas.

Julian Assange Starts Extradition Trial In UK Supreme Court

    Julian Assange

LONDON (AP) — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Wednesday launched a final attempt to persuade British officials not to force him to go to Sweden to face sex crimes allegations.

A lawyer for the 40-year-old Australian told Britain's highest court that age-old legal tradition would be compromised if it endorsed a European Arrest Warrant written up by Swedish prosecutors.

The Supreme Court hearing is the latest chapter in Assange's months-long fight against allegations of molestation and rape lodged by two women he met during a trip to Sweden in 2010, just as his website was grabbing worldwide attention with its spectacular leaks of sensitive U.S. government documents.

Assange denies the allegations, arguing that the sex was consensual, and has refused to return to Sweden, saying he fears the case against him is being manipulated to political ends.

Although Assange's saga has been shot through with international diplomacy, cyberactivism and scandal, the case now before the U.K. Supreme Court hinges on a dry technicality: Whether Sweden's public prosecutor was qualified to issue a warrant for Assange's arrest.

In Britain as in the United States, generally only judges can issue arrest warrants, and U.K. courts only honor European arrest warrants issued by what they describe as judicial authorities.

So far British courts have upheld the Swedish warrant on the grounds that prosecutors there, like elsewhere in Europe, play a quasi-judicial role.

Assange lawyer Dinah Rose tried to tear that argument apart Wednesday, telling the seven justices gathered in wood-panelled Courtroom 1 that a prosecutor "does not, and indeed cannot as a matter of principle, exercise judicial authority."

Rose said that putting the power to arrest suspects in the hands of the same prosecutors bent on trying and convicting them was completely unfair, arguing that the principle could be traced back to the laws of the Byzantine Empire.

"No one may be a judge in their own case," Rose said, later calling it "about as fundamental a principle as you can have."

Rose spent four hours combing through British case law, parliamentary reports and European draft treaties to buttress her argument — sometimes even slipping into French to make finer points about the documents' wording.

She went on to criticize the way that many countries had implemented the European arrest warrant system — which fast-tracks extraditions between European nations — and condemned Sweden's justice system, which she accused of falling down on its legal obligations.

She also had tart words for Britain's lower courts, which she said had shown signs of "incoherence" in their judgments.

Rose spoke confidently and with few interruptions — unlike Sweden's lawyer Clare Montgomery, who was repeatedly questioned by judges about her assertion that impartiality wasn't a prerequisite for issuing an arrest warrant.

"The decision whether to arrest somebody might be made by somebody who is partisan," Montgomery insisted. "That happens throughout Europe."

The U.K. justices will hear more from Montgomery on Thursday. Their ruling isn't expected for another few weeks. Experts interviewed before the hearing said the advantage was with the Swedish side. Karen Todner, a prominent extradition specialist, said that Assange's lawyers were unlikely to overcome the benefit of the doubt usually afforded to other European countries' judicial systems. British judges "absolutely defer" to their European counterparts' justice systems, she said, adding that she would be "very surprised" if Assange's team triumphed. If they rule against Assange, the 40-year-old Australian is expected to be on a flight to Sweden within two weeks. Assange could conceivably appeal to the European Court of Human Rights, but because Sweden is a fellow European country that would not stop his extradition. Once in Sweden he would be arrested and a detention hearing would be held within four days. Prosecutors could decide to release him after questioning, but the court could also extend his period of detention. Such hearings must be held every two weeks until a suspect is charged or released. There is no bail in Sweden. It's still not clear whether charges will be brought against Assange if he's brought to Sweden. If he were convicted, the penalties for the types of crime he's accused of range from fines to as much as six years in prison.

I met this young Black Swan couple about two years ago. They took care of one baby at that time and had hard time when the baby due to leave from parents.

Mother is always very sweet care and father is quite strict. Baby did not want to leave from parents. Father started force to drive away the child.

Then baby stuck to mother always. They started to go another pond near by and get back, sometimes with three together. Nearly one week later, almost dusk of one day,

While child swan was a little bit far away, parents suddenly flew away to leave the child alone behind. After this, the child was crying to wish finding parents.

Accidentally I saw this scene, I fed bread and few hours stayed together. Next morning I went to see the child but there is not. Then I went to original place

The child was there with mother. I think the child flew back at dawn. The child completely disappeared after few weeks from this happening.

Last year the couple had 5 babies at first. 2 disappeared in one to two weeks. Some body said it might be eaten by big eel.

They brought up with really tender care of three children and two children left the nest at first, almost one month later the other one disappeared.

This baby black swan was born early January. I named the baby“Rosy”, wishful for peace in the world as prayer of the New Year.
