                   Gordon Sixpense- The Story

The Sixpence Brothers
Legendary music publisher Stephen Squeak (born Arthur Sixpence) has died, leaving his multi-billion dollar fortune to his teenage seventh wife and not a penny to his struggling musician sons - Gordon, Dickie and Bernard. The Sixpence brothers, now bankrupted by their legal efforts to claim the estate, have been forced to make a bold shift in tactics.
They have hit the road and taken to theatres across the country to tell the world their story. That Gordon, the eldest and most eccentric of the trio, was responsible for writing every song that Stephen Squeak published. Almost every popular classic of the last fifty years was created by Gordon, secretly recorded by Stephen and then sold to the highest bidder.
They may be united in purpose but the brothers struggle to mask their dysfunction and squabble endlessly. Gordon is particularly troubled - easily confused and only able to communicate through his lyrics. And yet, he is the only one with the power to bring the family back together, to inspire them to perform at their best and to prove to the world, once and for all, that (to paraphrase a Gordon original made famous by Barry Manilow) "he is music and he writes the songs"!

Master of compilations Ashley Abram of "Now That's What I Call Music" fame uses his extensive knowledge of pop to create a new original comedy alongside his on-stage cohorts and 'brothers' the acclaimed New Zealand musicians John Gibson and Richard Adams.
"Gordon Sixpence - He Is Music" is a satire on the music business and all who sail in her that reveals some very strange family dynamics and extremely underhand dealings once The Sixpence Brothers take to the road and begin to reveal their story.
It turns out that their brother Gordon, the eldest and most eccentric of the trio, was actually the original writer of every song ever published by their father Arthur who, unbeknown to them, changed his name to Stephen Squeak and amassed one of the biggest fortunes ever in the music business.
They may be united in purpose theoretically, but the brothers struggle to mask their dysfunction and squabble endlessly. Gordon is particularly troubled and only able to converse in song. Yet he is the only one with the power to bring the family back together again and inspire them to perform at their best. Will he be able to prove to the world once and for all that (to paraphrase a Gordon original strangely attributed to the pen of The Beach Boys' Bruce Johnston and made famous by Barry Manilow) "he is music, and he writes the songs"?
Truly a musical cabaret like no other...
Tickets £7.00 from the Edinburgh Fringe Website

The Cast

Ashley Abram - Gordon Sixpence

Ashley Abram - ‘Gordon Sixpence’

Ashley is best known as the creator of over 100 UK No.1 Compilation Albums in the last 30 years. From "Raiders Of The Pop Charts" back in 1983 through to "Be My Baby" in 2012 via the multi-million selling "Now That's What I Call Music", "Smash Hits", "Moods", "Power Ballads" and "Best Album In The World...Ever!" Series. He was personally hired by Richard Branson to work on the NTWICM albums 30 years ago and has worked with numerous record companies over the years including Sony Music, Universal Music, EMI, Virgin, Chrysalis, Jive, Ronco, Fanfare and Southern Fried Records.
Now, the former club DJ, Holiday Camp Entertainer, Elvis Impersonator and acclaimed King Of Karaoke is returning to his performing roots with The Sixpence Brothers' “Rock'n'Roll Cabaret Show”. He plays the part of Gordon Sixpence, the greatest living unknown composer of all-time, who is only able to communicate through the vehicle of song!

Richard Adams - Dickie Sixpence

Richard Adams - ‘Dickie Sixpence’

Richard started his career as an actor in the late 1970's, then secured a featured part in the 1982 movie "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" and went on to work extensively in the film and television world in New Zealand throughout the 1980's and 1990's. Considered the country's No.1 Jazz Violinist, he was instrumental in setting up The Nairobi Trio 25 years ago and has since recorded a number of successful albums with them. Under this banner and his own name, he has toured the world and continues to play Jazz Festivals globally to this day.
Now, he is returning to his stage roots with The Sixpence Brothers' "Rock'n'Roll Cabaret Show" playing the part of Dickie Sixpence, the bad boy classical violinist who is forced to play pop music against his wishes. Guilty of attention-seeking behaviour at every turn, he will go to any length to get his name in lights!

John Gibson - Bernard Sixpence

John Gibson - ‘Bernard Sixpence’

John is an award-winning composer and has been writing original music for professional theatre film television and dance for over three decades. His work shows a passion for unique sound worlds. He is also an acclaimed pianist and singer in his own right and was briefly an actor and star of the New Zealand TV series ‘Heroes’. The Sixpence Brothers “Rock’n’Roll Cabaret Show” has seen him add the word ‘writer’ to his arsenal of accomplishments.
He is returning to his acting/pianist roots to play the part of Bernard Sixpence, the only sane one in the family and closet super sleuth. Will he be able to uncover the truth? How did his brother’s songs turn up on radio and television without him ever recording and what is the truth behind his father’s sudden transformation into billionaire music publisher Stephen Squeak?

My Edinburgh: Lucy Porter, part of the Fringe festival furniture

    http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/comedy/features/my-edinburgh-lucy-porter-part-of-the-fringe-festival-furniture-8746577.html

I first came to Edinburgh when I was 18 to serve on the Perrier Awards panel, and was inspired to try stand-up myself. In the intervening 22 years the press initially dubbed me a a 'fresh face', then 'a rising star', then an 'established name'. This year I was described as a 'permanent fringe fixture'. Like the rain, the sweaty venues and the panpipe players outside Waverley station, I have become part of the festival furniture.

Even Greyfriars Bobby only remained by his master's grave for 14 years. I've spent way longer than that haunting the places I discovered in the last millennium. Bar Napoli on Hanover Street, The Tempting Tattie on Jeffrey Street and the St Vincent Bar on St Vincent Street have all enjoyed my unwavering devotion. In recent times I have added the Dagda Bar on Buccleuch Street (I still can't pronounce that street name, in taxis I have to say 'it's near the Meadows') and Lord Bodo's on Dublin Street to my August itinerary.

I used to think that there was something vaguely tragic about my mum and dad going back to the same Eastbourne B&B every year because 'they knew what they were getting'. That's how I feel about the Fringe now - being in the same place each August is reassuring. The only difference is, I see a lot more political theatre and nude dancing than they ever did.

If I ever stop loving this city or this festival, I'll stop coming. That might take at least another 22 years.

    Lucy Porter: Northern Soul, The Stand, 5.10pm, to 25 August, not 12, 19 (0131 558 7272)

    Must see:

Garret Millerick: Does It Matter? (Underbelly, Bristo Square, 10.50pm). He's a very funny man and it appeals to me because it's a late-night philosophy show. I'm sure there will be lots of drunk deep thinkers there.

Seeking adventure at the Edinburgh Fringe

Nadia BrooksNadia Brooks is performing on a double-decker bus at the Edinburgh Fringe
I am on the top deck of a bus parked in the courtyard of a pub in Edinburgh. It is 10am, the windows are blacked out, the bus is bedecked with tartan bunting and a young woman is regaling us with tales of her adventures across the US.
There are four of us - the performer, Nadia Brooks, plus three in the audience. The power has gone off so she is showing us her accompanying slideshow on a laptop on a stool.
This is the start of my mission to try to get my head around the Edinburgh Fringe. With 2,871 shows - from comedy and theatre to magic and cabaret - it caters for just about every artistic taste under the sun.
In an attempt to get a taste of what the Fringe has to offer in just one day, I am watching as many shows as possible with the word "adventure" in the title.
Why "adventure"? It turns out it is one of the most popular words to have in a title for a show (except perhaps "show"), and it offers everything from stand-up comedy to a spoof musical to time-travelling magicians to adult puppetry.
    Anything goes
There are more adventurous shows I cannot see for one reason or another. I cannot get to children's shows with "adventure" in the title involving puppets, beatboxing and jazzed-up nursery rhymes.
Villains, Heroes and Adventures, a combination of storytelling and whisky tasting, only takes place later in the festival. And Ben Fogle's talk titled In The Name Of Adventure has sadly been cancelled.
So I start with Nadia Brooks' show on the bus, which has the snappy titleTyke Rider: A Yorkshire Lass's Driving Adventure from the City of Angels to Graceland via the Big Easy.
A Tyke is a nickname for someone from Yorkshire (she is from Sheffield) and she tells us she travelled in a car that reminded her a bit of the car from 1980s TV show Knight Rider.
It is Brooks' first appearance at the Fringe and is essentially a slideshow from her road trip, from being propositioned by David Hasselhoff to working on a film set in New Orleans to encountering aliens in New Mexico.
Somewhere around Kansas my mind wanders and I wonder how to describe it without sounding terribly mean. She had the chutzpah to bring a show to the Edinburgh Fringe, which could open any number of doors for the future. And this if the Fringe, where anything goes.
But my mean side says it is self-indulgent and has limited appeal - perhaps restricted to close family members. And even then...
I Need A DoctorI Need A Doctor features a big blue police box. Definitely not the Tardis
The next stop on my Edinburgh adventure is a spoof musical performed by two energetic Doctor Who geeks titled I Need A Doctor: The Unauthorised Whosical Adventure.
The premise is they were going to perform a show involving classic characters and storylines until the BBC threatened legal action for copyright infringement, so they came up with an alternative which is as close as possible without breaking any copyright rules.
James Wilson-Taylor is enjoyably over the top as "the doctor", with Jessica Spray as his companion Fiona McFeisty. They have K-10 the dog, the "men who are cyber" and "The Exterminators" - Wilson-Taylor wearing a colander attached to a plunger on his head. I promise not to tell the BBC lawyers.
Morgan and WestMorgan and West are billed as time-travelling magicians
With impressive facial hair and their small set packed with vintage props, Rhys Morgan and Robert West are the Victorian magic duo Morgan and West in A Grand Adventure.
They must travel the world to catch a thief who stole their book of tricks, making them a cross between Sherlock Holmes, Harry Houdini and Phileas Fogg.
It is an inventive twist on the magic show, but they are mainly low-grade illusions coupled with gentle comedy.
David BurkeIrish comedian David Burke talks of horror stories in backpackers' hostels
A couple of streets away in an attic above a pub, comedian David Burke, has a show titled The Exciting Adventure of an Uninteresting Man.
Despite a promotional photograph showing an awkward chap with beard, cardigan and cup of tea, Burke turns out to be a garrulous and likeable Irishman.
He talks about horror stories from backpackers' hostels around the world in between tangents loosely based on different nationalities, his pursuit of a woman and an irrational hatred of the French.
He has an easy rapport with the audience, who have packed out the venue. Admittedly it only has 20 seats, half of which are taken by a troupe of Scottish high school drama students fresh from performing Grease.
James CookLocal radio DJ-turned-stand-up comic James Cook performs Adventures On Air
I race across town to get to the back room of another pub forAdventures On Air, a stand-up routine by James Cook, based on his seven years working as a local commercial radio DJ.
His cheesy DJ voice is turned up to "ranty" as he tells of the glamour of turning on the Nuneaton Christmas lights and cutting the ribbon on a Nottingham branch of the Co-Op.
Cook also lets us in on one DJ pastime - timing how long their celebrity guests spent in the toilet. Darius Danesh topped the leaderboard at Mercia FM between 2004-06 with seven minutes 40, apparently. In a day of mixed delights, his is the most enjoyable hour.
Boris & SergeyLeather brothers Boris and Sergey star in A Vaudevillian Adventure
The final show stars two small leather puppets, Boris and Sergey in A Vaudevillian Adventure. This is puppetry for adults - they play poker, gyrate on an audience member's head and do a raunchy dance to Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights.
There are no strings - each puppet has three stony-faced helpers crowding them and holding their hands, feet and heads.
Adult puppetry is big at this year's Fringe, and there are some magical moments, like when they run or fly or fight. Those moments are not quite frequent enough.
So 13 hours after boarding the bus, the adventure is over. The quality of the entertainment has varied hugely, as have the styles of the shows. That, I guess, is the beauty of the Fringe.

Edinburgh Fringe: Scientists experiment on stage

Andrea Brunello in The Principle of UncertaintyPhysicist and actor Andrea Brunello stars in The Principle of Uncertainty
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-23571166

". Being a nerd is being unable to stop yourself communicating this cool stuff....”
Helen ArneyFestival of the Spoken Nerd

With shows celebrating Albert Einstein, the wonders of physics and the science of sex, this year's Edinburgh Fringe has an influx of scientists who have swapped the lecture theatre for the stage.
The Fringe is the world's largest performing arts festival, but this year the phrase "experimental theatre" has taken on an entirely new meaning.
In one Fringe show, titled Festival of the Spoken Nerd, three stand-up comedians and science buffs create a "fire tornado" on stage, electrocute a pickle and conduct other cool experiments.
Elsewhere, a physicist weaves drama into a quantum mechanics lecture, while Professor Peter Higgs - who discovered the Higgs boson - turned up to take part in one performance of a "stand-up physics" show named after him.
There are at least four shows combining science and comedy to explain relationships and sex, and a musical about Einstein, titled Relativitively Speaking, promises to prove that "Einstein = Musical Comedy Squared!"
"One link between science and theatre, is that we're both concerned with working out how things work and finding answers to problems," explains playwright Rob Drummond.
"We're both concerned with the quest for something that's unobtainable, and that's the truth."
The Festival of the Spoken NerdThe Festival of the Spoken Nerd creates a "fire tornado" on stage
Later this month, Drummond will chair a debate in Edinburgh titled Big Bang Theatre. It was organised by the Playwright's Studio Scotland after they noticed a trend at this year's festival for more shows based on scientific discovery.
Drummond believes the reason is linked to people looking to science rather than religion to explain the mysteries of the universe.
"With science answering many of those questions that we previously thought were unanswerable outside the realms of superstition and religious thinking, it's taken on a new importance in our lives," he says.
"I was brought up in a Church of Scotland household and, for the last decade, I've been slowly moving away from that and science is the thing that's taken hold of me more than anything. Now I'm a bit obsessed with science and quantum physics."
Andrea Brunello, a professional actor with a PhD in theoretical physics, has written and stars in The Principle of Uncertainty, which he describes as a real quantum mechanics lecture with a dramatic twist.
He says the addition of theatrical drama is crucial to ensure that science "talks to human beings and is not cold and detached".
"I believe that people are realising how important it is to have an understanding of our reality," he says.
Albert Einstein: Relativitively SpeakingJohn Hinton stars as Albert Einstein in Relativitively Speaking
Brunello's play is the first product of a collaboration with the physics department of the University of Trento in Italy to create theatrical science, or perhaps scientific theatre.
Brunello refers to the shows at the Fringe about "giants" of science like Einstein, Higgs and Sir Isaac Newton.
"I think people are starting to understand that these giants can make the world better," he says. "If we had more Newtons, say, in the world, I think the world would be much better.
"People want to be part of that and they are curious about it. These are becoming like pop culture icons."
The show about Prof Higgs, simply titled Higgs, is described by its Dutch creator Jan van den Berg as "stand-up physics".
"In the Netherlands we've got a new sort of theatre which is called stand-up philosophy, stand-up economics etc," he says. "At the moment that's what's going on, on the fringe scene."
A theatre and film-maker who enthuses about his love for particle physics, van den Berg says scientists and artists are linked because they are the only people really pondering long-term problems.
They look "further ahead than four years in politics or 24 hours on the stock exchange, and try to think about the bigger questions", he says.
Jan van den Berg (left) and Prof Peter HiggsProf Peter Higgs (right) joined Jan van den Berg after his performance of Higgs
Prof Higgs himself watched Saturday's performance of Higgs in the historic anatomy lecture theatre in Edinburgh's Summerhall before taking part in a post-show interview with van den Berg.
Asked about the abundance of theatrical shows based on science, Prof Higgs said: "I think it's very productive because you can put over things in a different language that's more readily accessible to people than I can."
Many comedians have tackled science on stage, radio or TV in recent years, from Robin Ince, who teamed up with Prof Brian Cox for the show Infinite Monkey Cage, to Chris Addison - who did a show about the periodic table.
Helen Arney started performing as a stand-up after graduating in theoretical physics from Imperial College, London, and is now in two science-based comedy shows at the Fringe.
"My favourite comedians and comedy writers think the same way as some scientists," she says.
"You don't just look at the world and see what is there on the surface. You have to find out how it works underneath.
"The most satisfying comedians are ones who don't just deal in stereotypes and surface stuff. They dig underneath to find out fundamental things about human nature and characters. And some of the best scientists see the world in the same way."
At the Fringe, she is in Domestic Science, a double act with her real-life partner Rob Wells; and she is also one of the three nerds enthusing about science and spreadsheets in the irreverent Festival of the Spoken Nerd.
They seem a bit too articulate and charismatic to be real nerds, however. "We're trying to redefine nerd as not being someone who sits in their room and never talks to anyone," Arney says.
"Being a nerd is being unable to stop yourself communicating this cool stuff. We cannot conceive that people would not be interested in this stuff."

Hello all - the marvellous day has arrived, the PBH Free Fringe album is now officially available to buy.

Yes. Over thirty bands and performers from the worlds of indie and comedy have come together to create a unique download album all entirely in aid of the PBH Free Fringe!

    Free Fringe Album

The compilation features 36 new, unreleased or rare tracks from a wide range of performers including John Otway, Chris T-T, Helen Arney, Standard Fare, The Bobby McGees, The Just Joans and many many more. It's released today and costs just five pounds for over an hour and a half's worth of music. That's equivalent to just 14p a track!

The album will be deleted in six weeks time, on April 15, so lovers of music and bargains will need to hurry - it can be found exclusively on bandcamp, at its dedicated website: pbhfreefringebenefitalbum.bandcamp.com
The Free Fringe began in 1996, founded by Peter Buckley Hill, with his show Peter Buckley Hill And Some Comedians.  Peter saw the Fringe as it then was: performers losing thousands of pounds, venues with four or five people in them, and complaints about high ticket prices. He saw that this was a vicious cycle. As costs to the performers rose, ticket prices rose. As ticket prices rose, fewer people went to shows and even fewer went to shows by artists they hadn't heard of. And this was bad for comedy; you can't make people laugh if there are only four of them, one in each corner of an otherwise empty room. And the more empty the audiences were, the more prices went up, to cover the rising costs of the venues. There seemed no escape from the cycle, and yet it was providing no opportunity for performers to rise through the ranks. The circle had to be cut.

The History of the Free Fringe

Making the space free to performers would not be enough. The benefit had to be passed on to the consumer. Only thus could more people be attracted to see more shows. The show that started the Free Fringe ‘Peter Buckley Hill And Some Comedians’ was the first of its kind. Peter paid a promoter for the space (there was no other option) and absorbed the loss. People called him mad. But audiences came. And came again. The bar broke all previous sales records.

In 1997 a different promoter attempted to force Peter to charge for admission. He resisted, and won. Peter Buckley Hill And Some Comedians II went ahead, and this time he didn't have to pay for the space. Indeed, it turned out that the promoter had not been charged for the space by the venue; she had sold the slots to her fellow artists and kept the money. The middleman was cut out, and the principle was established that increased drink sales were enough to satisfy the venue.

1998: PBHASC III became more established and increased its length to 1 1/2 hours. Name comedians played guest slots. But the pub manager left, and the area management didn't want the show to continue. A new venue had to be found. The experiment could have died at that point, but PBH was determined that it shouldn't.  After some searching, a new venue was found: the Three Quarter Sports Café on Grassmarket. This converted church had a wonderful performing room on two levels upstairs; this arrangement was marred only by the management's occasional cancellations of the shows to broadcast football and other sports on the big screen. It was in this venue that the first attempt to broaden the Free Fringe idea to more shows was made. The idea was to use weekday afternoons for a three-hour long rolling preview of any Fringe shows that wanted it, in 15-minute slots. This was an ambitious plan involving vast co-ordination between slots in the days before everybody had a mobile phone, and consequently suffered from occasional no-shows and dropouts. For these reasons, it didn't always succeed, but often it did, end the public took it in good part, often having lunch while watching the varied previews going past them. PBH bought an electric piano for this show; it was played twice. He still has it, and he still can't play it.

1999/2000/2001/2002: There were three years at the Three-Quarter; the public came in increasing numbers and name comedians played the shows. But the bar was closed and the venue sold, and yet another venue was needed. This was quite difficult to find. Eventually, the Canon's Gait was approached. The then manager enthusiastically agreed to host PBH's two shows, but no more than that. Any expansion would have to wait for the future. In fact, the 2002 shows nearly did not take place, since that manager then left and the message about the shows was not passed on. Fortunately, the situation was rectified in time and PBHASC VII took place in the Canon's Gait. Smaller than the Three-Quarter, in nevertheless boasted a warm atmosphere and the audience flocked. After so much upheaval in the past, the Free Fringe had found a home and a place to expand in. Or so it seemed.

It was not to be. One of the numerous parasites who spoil the Fringe intervened. Declaring himself a comedy promoter, he persuaded the Canon's Gait's management that he could programme the space with better shows. PBH said he could do the same, but the management went with the 'promoter'. Who proceded to organise no shows whatsoever, having offered the space he was given free at £2000 per one-hour slot to performers. Meanwhile, no free venue was available to PBH and the cause seemed lost.

2003: A chink of light showed through this darkness in June 2003, when the former manager of the Canon's Gait, Linsay Watts, telephoned PBH to say that she was now manager of a trade union club in Brunswick Street, and would PBH be interested in doing his show there? By that time the Fringe programme had long since gone to press, and PBH had made other arrangements for August. Driving to Edinburgh and back in the same day, he and his partner looked at the space offered, and though he could not change his arrangements, he promised to make something happen. A show called Some Comedians Without Peter Buckley Hill was put in place, and did well despite being in an unfamiliar building, in an otherwise Fringe-less part of Edinburgh, and having no entry in the programme. The enthusiasm of the organisers, and the loyalty of the audience PBH had built over the years, carried the day.

2004: Saw the return of PBHASC VIII, and this time another opportunity to expand the Free Fringe, using extra space in the UCW Club. And it was then PBH made the biggest mistake in the whole saga of the Free Fringe. Seeking an easy source of variable-bill shows to complement his own two successful shows, he approached the Laughing Horse organisation. They put on a third variable-bill show and offered PBH a small sum to attach their name to the venue. The shows went well. The formula worked. Now, after all the years, the opportunity to expand had finally arrived.
2005: The Canon's Gait was brought back into play, so the Free Fringe had two venues. PBHASC IX went back to its third home, and a full raft of shows was booked for both venues. The booking was supposed to be a joint operation; instead, the Laughing Horse did it and presented PBH with a fait accompli. They also appended, without PBH's agreement, their name to the venues. Well, these were minor annoyances, and the important thing was that the shows went on. It was proven that the Free Fringe concept could work on a wider scale.

2006: saw a collaboration between PBH and the Laughing Horse organisation. This also saw the expansion on the Free Fringe. This worked exceptionally well, with full capacities seen at all venues, to the delight of both audiences and performers. However, behind the scenes the relationship between Laughing Horse and PBH was breaking down. There was a clear division between Laughing Horse’s commercial approach, and PBH’s collaborative not-for-profit ethos. The behaviour of the Laughing Horse organisation during this period was reprehensible, attempting to take control away from Free Fringe founder Peter Buckley Hill, even trying to ban him from his own venues and events. Much about these events has been written elsewhere on the internet. For Peter Buckley Hill’s own account of these events go to: Truth & Lies

2007: the true Free Fringe coped with the opposition festival set up by the Laughing Horse, and survived a venue suddenly closing three weeks before the Fringe started. In the first week, it did nothing but rain, and the number of visitors to Edinburgh plummeted. We survived all this; not only survived, but triumphed. 1200 performances of 61 shows in seven venues happened, to acclaim from audience and critics. The ethos had proved itself. Performers worked together, provided all the equipment that the venues could not, and worked collaboratively and on their own initiative to make the Free Fringe happen. And it was extremely successful.

We will always continue to promote a collaborative, not-for-profit Free Fringe Festival. Free for Performers, Free for audiences, and free of the commercial trappings that have led to the spiralling cost of both attending, and performing at the Fringe.

The fringe is coming back to the people. This year the Free Fringe is bigger than ever, with more free venues, more free shows, and the best line-up yet. Check out the shows as they are put into the directory, and keep supporting the one and only, truly free Fringe!
