Traveller Wagon Wheel Theatre Company presents
It's a Cultural Thing...or is it ?
 (A Traveller in Progress)

Starring Michael Collins and Patricia McCarthy
Directed by Mick Rafferty

In a bid to convince a new generation of the importance of education, Michael Collins tells his life story from his first memories of a traditional Traveller life in the Midlands bounded by barrel top wagons and tents, through to the intolerable hardships of settlement in a halting site in Finglas. While he rejoices in the freedom of his child hood and youth, a narrator reveals the darker side of the changes in Traveller culture and the response of the settled community to these changes. This is the story of one community’s struggle and a re-emergence of a new Traveller identity in contemporary Ireland. Following its success at the 2005 Dublin Fringe Festival, The Space is delighted to wel come this touching, funny story which traces the history of the social barriers experienced by the Traveller community in Ireland

'Entertaining, enriching and provocative……….Excellent.'
The Irish Times

Traveller Wagon Wheel Theatre Company

Michael Collins is a member of the Irish Traveller community. Travellers are an indigenous minority, documented as being part of Irish society for centuries. Travellers have a long shared history and value system which make them a distinct group. They have their own language, customs and traditions. Michael has been an advocate of Traveller human rights for over 20 years. He has been developing the idea of establishing a Traveller Theatre Company which would work with Travellers and other socially excluded and ethnic minority groups to allow them to tell there stories and issues in an artistic way. This company will be called Traveller Wagon Wheel Theatre Company. Michael is an actor, writer and performer he has acted on stage in the Abby and Olympia Theatres. Michael has written his own play “It’s a cultural thing or is it” which he has spent the past two years performing in venues in Ireland and in the UK.

What is Social Entrepreneurs Ireland?
http://www.socialentrepreneurs.ie/2006/09/michael_collins/

Social Entrepreneurs Ireland is an organisation aimed at encouraging and supporting the development of social entrepreneurship in Ireland. Our mission of promoting social entrepreneurship will be realised by fostering the early stage development of a new generation of social entrepreneurs and by actively working in conjunction with the business, third level, public and voluntary sectors to support the development of a new social entrepreneurship movement.

What We Believe?

We believe that in every generation there are social entrepreneurs. We believe that these social entrepreneurs are key agents of change and creators of social value that enrich our society; Irish examples include Mary Davis, Sister Stanislaus Kennedy and Fr. Peter McVerry. However, we believe that the current generation of social entrepreneurs are struggling to grow their ideas and their organisations and to develop to the point where they change society. In today's Ireland social entrepreneurs find it hard to get the practical and moral support they need to make that life changing decision and to stick with it. We believe that by launching Social Entrepreneurs Ireland and by encouraging others to join the movement, we can help to create a space for social entrepreneurship in modern Ireland.

What We Do

Social Entrepreneurs Ireland directly supports the early stage development of social entrepreneurs by providing a range of supports. These supports consist of financial investment in social entrepreneurs, technical training, peer networking, mentoring and links to other social entrepreneur networks. Our commitment to the social entrepreneur is typically from twelve months to two years.

Both these plays are written and performed by well known Irish actor, Michael Collins.....
which show the history of Travellors in Ireland...."an absolutely gripping performance"
.............USA Weekly News....... When asked by the USA Weekly News how long did it took to write these two plays...Michael replied... ".....about 24 years....."  the reason why it took so long in is that in fact the two plays are the story of Michael Collins and his family's life in Ireland as travellors
..

It's a Cultural Thing is Michael Collins playing as a Child, from a child's point of view...

Mobile...
is Michael Collins playing the young adult travellor and shows the real life problems an issues travellors faced living in Ireland as against settled people, who had stable homes and settled in one town and/or city in Ireland.... while travellors and their families moved from place to place, lived in caravans and made a living  selling goods at markets and fairs throughout Ireland........A story that you will not here told anywhere else

who won't anymore...
and who always will.
So,  don't worry about people from your past,
there's  a reason why they didn't make it to your  future.

Universal Arts
was formed in 1998 by Tomek Borkowy and Laura Mackenzie Stuart by amalgamating Arts International Exchange (est. 1994) and Eastern European Media Services (est. 1993). It acts as performing arts promoters, agents, producers and arts related consultants.

We believe that in a market economy theatre production is like any other product, which has to be well developed and marketed to attract potential buyers (i.e. receiving theatres, festivals and, most of all, audience).

The original aim of Universal Arts was to assist international theatre companies to extend their touring reach by showcasing work at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and marketing it to international theatre and festival programmers.  This has since extended to developing a world-wide agency and a production arm of the business.

THE MANAGEMENT

Tomek Borkowy – Artistic Director
Born in Warsaw, Poland, he graduated with a Master’s Degree from the State Academy of Theatrical Arts in Krakow. Tomek Borkowy has nearly 35 years of experience as actor, director, producer, theatre manager, agent and drama teacher. Since his first professional appointment as Artistic Director of the repertory theatre company ‘Young Theatre’ in Krakow in 1978 he has worked on literally hundreds of theatre and film projects. Film and TV management includes running Eastern European Media Services UK. His original agency work focused mainly on Eastern European theatre companies. Recognising the central role which the Edinburgh Festival Fringe continues to play in the promotion of international productions he has worked closely with the Fringe for last 18 years. His impressive track record in presenting innovative international professional work won him a Herald Angel Award. A natural extension of this work was to develop the year-round touring potential of key clients. Developing such links is an on-going priority for Universal Arts in order to maximise the sales advantage to its clients.

Laura Mackenzie Stuart –
 Managing Director

For many years Laura has worked in business and financial administration of the arts. From 1990 – 1998 she was Deputy Director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival. Particular areas of responsibility included co-ordinating the needs of over 700 companies coming from all over the world each festival, running the Festival Box-office (turnover of £1.5m in 8 weeks) and running the Sponsorship Department. Membership of the Society’s Management Committee provided 8 years experience in forming a solid foundation for arts business management. Laura joined Universal Arts in 1998 as Managing Director. As the year-round representative of professional touring companies in the UK and abroad she has formed close working relationships with Visiting Arts and a number of British Council offices and gained financial support for a number of clients. Laura has worked with the Producers of a number of shows which have been launched during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and which have gone on to reach international acclaim. She also has a broad based knowledge of current industry standard marketing practice and a proven track record in running large departments and controlling and implementing all aspects of current employment legislation.

USA Weekly News 100 Star Awards for the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe include the following Fringe Shows,
Ths is not a final list as other 2008 Edinburgh Fringe shows are still being considered for by the editors of the USA Weekly News for USA Weekly News 100 Star Awards from film footage taken during the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe Festival:

1. A Festival Dickens - Simon Callow performed at the Assembly

2. Life at the Molecular Level presented by Present Attempt, performed at the Underbelly

Present Attempt were also winners of a USA Weekly News 100 Star Award Night
for Attempt 3.4 presented at the 23007 Edinburgh Fringe film, which was also chosen by the INL News group to be mad einto a feature foilm, beinbg the first feature film to be made out of a fringe play using six cameras to film it at the C Venues and edited from the six different camera angles into a feature film. The idea behind this was to show the potential of turning fringe performances into fetiures film that can be played in cinemas all around the world a sa n alternative to the big budget Hollywood block busters, having captured the spirt and excitement of a fringe performance performed live at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. There is an ever increasing world interest in Fringe performances, however with the large amount of performances every year at fringe festivals around the world and the difficulty of many interested people not being able  to see them live. those interested in this cutting edge theatre, music, dance, comedy and other types of performances would them be able to enjoy fringe performances on film at their local cinema all year round. This way performers at the fringe can receive income all year round from these films
and this income can help make up the losses often made by performers coming to the fringe each year in the hope they can recieve some world wide attention and recognition to their performances.
In 2007 during the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe there were in excess of 200 million clicks on web sites associated with the Edinburgh Fringe and Yahoo named the Edinburgh Fringe as one of the highest searched subjects on the internet. This shows there is increasing large world interest in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which has become the largest Arts Festival in the world.
