Despite Turmoil in Financial Markets, No Signs That Booming Art Market Is Softening
NEW YORK (AP) -- Art is hot. Despite turmoil in the financial markets, there are no signs that the art market is softening. The fall auction season in New York saw robust prices across most categories, with postwar and contemporary works in particular going through the roof. It seemed like a new record was being shattered every time an art auction was held.
This record haul generated billions of dollars for auction houses such as Sotheby's, contributing to solid earnings but also exposing auctioneers to volatility when sales didn't go as well as expected.
The reason for the art market's strong showing? The weak dollar, expanding world wealth and new buyers from countries not previously associated with the art collecting community, experts say. Over the last five years, wealthy buyers from Russia, China, India and the Middle East have greatly helped fuel the art market.
The boom has occurred against the backdrop of a dreadful year for the financial sector in the U.S. -- a slump that seems to have been offset by the influx of foreign buyers and big American buyers who have not been affected by the uncertain economy.
These buyers paid astronomical amounts for art. An Andy Warhol painting sold for more than $71 million in a May auction that brought in a total of nearly $385 million. A Matisse fetched more than $33.6 million in a November sale that also took in nearly $400 million. A limestone lion sculpture that measures 3 1/4 inches hauled in $57 million earlier this month.
Still, the art market hasn't been immune to turbulence.
Sotheby's suffered a lackluster modern and impressionist sale in November in which Van Gogh's "The Fields," estimated at $28 million to $35 million, failed to sell and many other works sold below their estimates. Sotheby's stock plunged 28 percent that day because of investors' fears that the company had overextended itself in guaranteeing sellers' reserve -- the price the house promises to pay if a certain item doesn't sell.
"What the market was saying was that the property being offered was very heavily estimated and the quality was not there to support this value," said Ian Peck, CEO of the art-finance firm Art Capital Group.
"If you try to sell stuff for twice what it's worth, the market's going to say no," said Peck, adding that he heard that the Van Gogh later sold privately for about $20 million.
Peck says his blanket advice to clients is to take a wait-and-see attitude for the next year, and see how the art market plays out. "Our view is that within 12 months we'll know if this thing is getting worse, meaning if a recession occurs in the U.S. market or not."
Generally, the art market trails the Dow Jones industrial average and other market indexes by about six to eight months, Peck said. And stocks have been volatile, with big swings up and down, since the summer.
But he was optimistic that the art market would ride out the crisis, and noted that his firm, which is essentially a private banker for art buyers, has seen a spike in loan applications to buy art. And people at auction houses aren't really seeing much of a downturn because of problems on Wall Street.
"If you look around, particularly in New York, it seems like everyone's a billionaire and they don't seem to be affected terribly by this credit crunch," said David Nash, of Mitchell-Innes & Nash, a private New York art consultancy and gallery specializing in impressionist, modern and contemporary masters.
While art from all eras is selling well, works by modern masters like Warhol and Mark Rothko and living artists like Richard Prince and Damien Hirst are especially hot. In oil producing countries like the United Arab Emirates, the appetite is for modern American works by such artists as Keith Haring, Jean Michel Basquiat and Warhol, Peck said.
"The most money is chasing these modern and contemporary names, and that's just what's in fashion really," Peck said, adding that buyers with new money from Russia and China have a "limitless appetite for Western art and objects. Prices in some cases have doubled or tripled in the past year."
Michael Moses, co-founder of the Mei Moses All Art Index, which looks at the historical performance of art as an investment and asset class, said it is noteworthy that the art buying public has become so global.
"This is the first time in a long time where we've had truly universal world wealth expand. ... It's a relatively new precedent that there is so much wealth being created all over the world," he said.
Overall, Peck estimates that the art market gained about 18 percent in 2006 -- not a bad return at a time of turmoil in the stock market.
"My experience over the last month or so is that there is a lot of money around, a lot of people looking to buy things," said Nash. "There are not very many people who've said I'm not going to buy this NOW because I'm worried about the state of the economy."

Nicolas Cage's adventure sequel "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" raced to $65 million during its first five days of release across North America, distributor Walt Disney Pictures said on Tuesday.
The tally consists of actual sales for the four days since the film opened last Friday, and a Christmas day estimate. Final sales data will be issued on Wednesday.
Through December 24, the film had also earned $27.5 million in 17 international markets, mostly in Asia. The critically maligned sequel to the 2004 smash "National Treasure" stars Cage as a treasure hunter who flies around the world trying to solve an ancient puzzle related to Lincoln's assassination.
Will Smith's sci-fi thriller "I Am Legend" was No. 2 with five-day sales of $47.5 million, taking its 12-day haul to $150.8 million, said Warner Bros. Pictures.
Because of the holiday, data for many films were incomplete. Twentieth Century Fox reported a four-day tally of $32.8 million for its surprise hit "Alvin and the Chipmunks," saying it was impossible to estimate Christmas Day sales. After 11 days, the kids film has earned $88.7 million.
The fact-based political comedy "Charlie Wilson's War" earned $14.75 million, and the Johnny Depp musical "Sweeney Todd" $12.75 million, both after five days. Their respective studios, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures, warned that the Christmas Day components were rough guesses.
The box office jury is still out on "Charlie Wilson," a high-profile vehicle starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, which is playing in twice as many theaters as "Sweeney Todd," which DreamWorks co-produced with Warner Bros.
Further down the rankings, "P.S. I Love You" had earned $9.1 million in its first five days. After a low-key opening weekend, Warner Bros. said it hoped more women would turn out in force for the Hilary Swank tearjerker now that Christmas-related chores are behind them.
The musical spoof "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" reported a four-day haul of $4.7 million. Distributor Columbia Pictures did not have a Christmas Day estimate for the box office disappointment.
Midfield rankings will change when final data are issued Wednesday because they will include sales for three Christmas Day releases: the action sequel "Alien vs. Predator: Requiem," the Denzel Washington drama "The Great Debaters," and the family fantasy "The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep."

1. Molly Bloom Well respected Irish actress Eilin O'Dea in her performance of " Molly Bloom" an extract from James Joyce's "Ulysses" Paris 1922. This is recognised as one of the most famous female narratives in modern literature..
2. Traditional t's a Cultural Thing.... or Is It?" and “Mobile” Traditional t's a Cultural Thing.... or Is It?" and “Mobile”Irish actor Michael Collins from the travelling community performing his outstanding self penned plays called, " It's a Cultural Thing....or Is It?" and “Mobile”. These two plays are a not to be missed, authentic true history of the Irish travelling community. When asked how long it took him to write these two unique plays, Michael Collins replied.... "about 24 years".
In " It's a Cultural Thing.... or Is It?", Michael plays out the history of the Irish travelling community from the eyes of child , the storyline consisting of actual childhood memories from Michael's childhood. This is a very emotional play for Michael Collins to perform, because during the performance memories of his father John Collins, a well respected member of the Irish Community, are there at every turn. This play is excellent for school children all the way to senior adults, which is how the mixture was in the recent sell out performance in Dublin on the 20th November 2007 of " It's a Cultural Thing.... or Is It?". Not only were the adults in fits of laughter, suspense and intrigue, but the school children in the audience were in fits of laughter all the way through the play, as Michael Collins enacted an outstanding child performance.
"Mobile" is performed by Michael Collins as a young adult in the travelling community, and shows the difficulties travellers had in dealing with Irish life as against settled people. Again, this play is an excellent lesson in Irish history that should not be missed by anyone interested in what it really was like to be a member of the travelling community in Ireland over the last 100 years.
3. "All Change", written and performed by seasoned English / Australian stand up comedian, Kerry Leigh. Kerry was born in England but was educated at the Curtain University in Western Australia where she completed a BA with Honours, studying English with a double major in Creative Writing and Theatre Arts. Kerry Leigh says this about her play "All Change" -- "Juggling isn't easy - some days you hand your baby a beer and ask your man if he's done a pooh-pooh. Has this funny mummy gone gaga? Ride the highs and lows of a comedian's experience of first-time motherhood as she shares her story with painful honesty and curious humour...." Often mistaken for an Antipodean, Kerry was sent to Australia as a convict when she was just 9 years old for heinous crimes against fashion, returning to the UK in her twenties where she has since developed a dry and witty comedic style musing on the absurdities of life through the eyes of a pseudo-Australian.
4. Jessica Delfino who went to Philadelphia Art Institute, which Jessica says is "the home of brotherly love...where the brothers love each other." After being seen by the INL News Team in London and at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with her show entitled, Songs About Vaginas, , she was invited to join the NYITFest. Jessica has had some her songs banned by you tube and denounced….. yes…. denounced by the Catholic League. Jessica destroyed the audiences in London and in Edinburgh, when she brought her one woman show to the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It is hard to describe Jessica using just words, however the USA Weekly News described her performance as "innocently provocative."
5. Beat Up Dirty Yanks Crew, An out-there character Los Angeles comedy group, now well-known as the Beat Up Dirty Yanks Crew, Ronnie Proudy, Tim Schwartz and Ty Twiss, after the show they presented at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival blew audiences away with laughter. These zany guys have the unique ability to interact with any type of audience, any where in the world without any script what so ever. These guys are improvisation specialists in character comedy, and are America's most idiotic, obnoxious, and energetic outcasts. Their now infamous Beat Up Dirty Yanks show in Edinburgh was a comedic character smack down slammed with stand-up, sketch and improvisation. Some contenders included Buck, a Jewish soul loving hick and Hector, a chauvinistic Mexican plumber. The New York International Theater Film and Arts Festival ( NYITFest ) www.nyitfest.com
presents outstanding acts from fringe festivals around the world. Festivals such as the Edinburgh, Dublin, Australian and New York Fringe festivals will be represented, featuring performers presenting their writing, theater, films, art and comedy.
The New York International Theater Film and Arts Festival will be held annually in New York City, beginning 19th January and running to the 23rd February, 2008 at 45 Bleecker Street Theaters, New York City.
The acts selected have received one of the USA Weekly News 100 star awards for holding a higher standard than the average 5-star awards normally given by the media industry. The USA Weekly News are the major sponsors of the New York International Theatre Film and Arts Festival, but the but the NYITFest hopes other sponsors in the business, media, entertainment, music, dance, art, internet, computer and telecommunications and film industries will come forward to help support this extremely and necessary worthwhile event.
Through being invited to perform at the NYITFest, the selected acts will be able to perform in the world's spotlight to further their careers in acting, dancing, directing, film-making, music, writing, singing, comedy. It is hoped that this will bring world-wide attention to these special performances.

The years inaugural 2008 New York International Theatre, Film and Arts Festival has selected the following acts to perform:
1. Molly Bloom Well respected Irish actress Eilin O'Dea in her performance of " Molly Bloom" an extract from James Joyce's "Ulysses" Paris 1922. The writer and the actress speak for themselves, in this academy award The writer and the actress speak for themselves, in this academy award quality performance of James Joyce's Ulysses Molly Bloom's soliloquy at the end of the James Joyce's "Ulysses". This is recognised as one of the most famous female narratives in modern literature..
2. Traditional t's a Cultural Thing.... or Is It?" and “Mobile” Traditional t's a Cultural Thing.... or Is It?" and “Mobile”Irish actor Michael Collins from the travelling community performing his outstanding self penned plays called, " It's a Cultural Thing....or Is It?" and “Mobile”. These two plays are a not to be missed, authentic true history of the Irish travelling community. When asked how long it took him to write these two unique plays, Michael Collins replied.... "about 24 years".
In " It's a Cultural Thing.... or Is It?", Michael plays out the history of the Irish travelling community from the eyes of child , the storyline consisting of actual childhood memories from Michael's childhood. This is a very emotional play for Michael Collins to perform, because during the performance memories of his father John Collins, a well respected member of the Irish Community, are there at every turn. This play is excellent for school children all the way to senior adults, which is how the mixture was in the recent sell out performance in Dublin on the 20th November 2007 of " It's a Cultural Thing.... or Is It?". Not only were the adults in fits of laughter, suspense and intrigue, but the school children in the audience were in fits of laughter all the way through the play, as Michael Collins enacted an outstanding child performance.
"Mobile" is performed by Michael Collins as a young adult in the travelling community, and shows the difficulties travellers had in dealing with Irish life as against settled people. Again, this play is an excellent lesson in Irish history that should not be missed by anyone interested in what it really was like to be a member of the travelling community in Ireland over the last 100 years.
3. "All Change", written and performed by seasoned English / Australian stand up comedian, Kerry Leigh. Kerry was born in England but was educated at the Curtain University in Western Australia where she completed a BA with Honours, studying English with a double major in Creative Writing and Theatre Arts. Kerry Leigh says this about her play "All Change" -- "Juggling isn't easy - some days you hand your baby a beer and ask your man if he's done a pooh-pooh. Has this funny mummy gone gaga? Ride the highs and lows of a comedian's experience of first-time motherhood as she shares her story with painful honesty and curious humour...." Often mistaken for an Antipodean, Kerry was sent to Australia as a convict when she was just 9 years old for heinous crimes against fashion, returning to the UK in her twenties where she has since developed a dry and witty comedic style musing on the absurdities of life through the eyes of a pseudo-Australian.
4. Jessica Delfino who went to Philadelphia Art Institute, which Jessica says is "the home of brotherly love...where the brothers love each other." After being seen by the INL News Team in London and at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with her show entitled, Songs About Vaginas, , she was invited to join the NYITFest. Jessica has had some her songs banned by you tube and denounced….. yes…. denounced by the Catholic League. Jessica destroyed the audiences in London and in Edinburgh, when she brought her one woman show to the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It is hard to describe Jessica using just words, however the USA Weekly News described her performance as "innocently provocative."
5. Beat Up Dirty Yanks Crew, An out-there character Los Angeles comedy group, now well-known as the Beat Up Dirty Yanks Crew, Ronnie Proudy, Tim Schwartz and Ty Twiss, after the show they presented at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival blew audiences away with laughter. These zany guys have the unique ability to interact with any type of audience, any where in the world without any script what so ever. These guys are improvisation specialists in character comedy, and are America's most idiotic, obnoxious, and energetic outcasts. Their now infamous Beat Up Dirty Yanks show in Edinburgh was a comedic character smack down slammed with stand-up, sketch and improvisation. Some contenders included Buck, a Jewish soul loving hick and Hector, a chauvinistic Mexican plumber. You simply never know what to expect from these guys so there is no way to put a title on the show they will present at the 2008 New York International Theater, Film and Arts Festival, other than they promise it will be show to remember and not to be missed. When Ronnie Prouty, the leader of the Beat Up Dirty Yanks Gang was invited to perform at the 2008 New York International Theater, Film and Arts Festival his response was, "I am very excited to go to the NYITFest, I will bring a variety show that will blow your top off." So, be warned -- these guys are going to be armed and dangerous.

8. Attempt 3.4 The Film - Attempt 3.4 was an Edinburgh Fringe play now a film - Four Two Planners of the Apocalypse Draw the Blueprint and build the city in 60 minutes. Attempt 3.4 unfolds a map of the city. Four people, lost. Coloured light bulbs illuminate their search for each other as they travel the grid of the city. Sometimes they meet, sometimes they just brush shoulders, sometimes they slip through the web, but instead of loss, they discover the pleasure of falling....
Filmed from the last live performance at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and produced by International News Limited association with Bitter Blue Productions, this is one of the very first times an Edinburgh Fringe Play has been turned into a feature film.

THE INL News Group is working on getting Ellen DeGeneres to jointly host the Gala Premier Preview Show to be held on the 19th January 2008. Ellen is best mates with Hillary Clinton and we are hoping the get Hillary and Bill Clinton along and encourage Bill to play sax for a couple of numbers with the Das Contras band. This will be great publicity for the artists and the show, as well for Hillary's presidential campaign....
Ellen is really great value and very user friendly and would add a lot to the premier of the Show on the 19th January 2008 which should be fun for all and a really great night not to be missed on the your social calander.

As resident compere for ‘Laughing Cows’ at The Frog and Bucket in Manchester since 2004, Kerry has become adept at comedy crowd control. Her surreal twist on recent events combined with a talent for quickly building a rapport with the audience makes her a fresh and captivating host each month.
Kerry’s hosting talent is in demand as she now also MCs the recently formed ‘Roughsketch Comedy Club’ in Manchester for which she also writes and performs.
Kerry was invited to Edinburgh as a Semi-finalist in Channel 4’s ‘So You Think You’re Funny’ competition in 2004 and was a finalist in 2005’s Citylife Comedian of the Year competition, reviewed here by Citylife writer Marissa Burgess:
